Polycom announces plans to move 150 employees here to new consolidated office in Silicon Valley

A fast-growing high-tech company is moving from Pleasanton to the South Bay.

Polycom announced it plans to relocate the 150 employees it has in Pleasanton into a consolidated office in Silicon Valley in about a year from now.

Polycom employees from San Jose and Santa Clara will also transfer to the new facility. The location hasn't been determined yet.

Polycom has been located in Pleasanton since 2002. Company officials say they've enjoyed being here, but they need to consolidate operations.

"Pleasanton is a wonderful community. It's been a great place for our employees and company as a whole," said Caroline Japic, a spokeswoman for the video conferencing company. "However, our rapidly growing company is out of space in Pleasanton. We felt this was the right time to make a move. Being in Silicon Valley will give us visibility and visit-ability."

Polyco reported $1.2 billion in revenues in 2010 and posted a $68 million profit. Last year, it added 537 employees to its workforce worldwide. It now employs 370 people in the Bay Area, 150 of those in Pleasanton.

Pamela Ott, Pleasanton's director of economic development, said the city hates to see Polycom go but that the city also understand the economic necessity of consolidation.

"Polycom has really been a great business partner here in Pleasanton," Ott said.

Polycom is one of the larger employees in the city, which now has a 20 percent vacancy rate in its office buildings.

Ott said the city is reaching out to companies to encourage them to locate here. In the past year, Clorox, Xradia and Callidus Software have all transferred employees to Pleasanton.
