A first-hand account of a student on the opening day of the high school art exhibit, Off the ChARTs!
As I walked into the open doors of the Harrington Gallery, I was unsure of what to expect. I had never been in an art reception and had no idea how I was supposed to act. Should I stand by my photograph and answer questions for visitors? Should I enjoy myself and take a look at what other students did? Or should I just sort of stay in the background and let people wander around? These were just a few of the thoughts that ran through my head as the reception started. Despite my anxieties, it turned out to be a light and open event. On April 20th, 2012, the Firehouse Arts Center opened its doors to Off the ChARTs, a gallery of more than 40 works exclusively by Amador, Foothill and Village high school students. As I perused through the …

The show was for Northern California HomeAid, a group that builds dignified housing where homeless families can rebuild their lives.
Howie Mandel brought his conversational style of standup comedy to the stage of the Lesher Center Friday night. The television game show and talent show star picked out audience members, asked pointed questions and brought forward items that yielded yucks in unexpected ways. Mandel picked on people but in a good-natured way. There was an occasional wrong turn, but it usually worked through the agency of Mandel's comedic timing. "I don't edit myself," he said, but it seemed to me that that was exactly what he was doing. A woman in the front row was texting her adult son, who was getting ready to board a plane from LA to the Bay Area. A woman in the back didn't know the name of her friend's pet fish. A doctor named Carla — who will never …

By Barbara Lewis Pleasanton's Civic Arts Stage Company will present Judy Blume’s classic story of siblings, Tales of the Fourth Grade Nothing, over two weekends, May 4-13, at the Firehouse Arts Center. The play is about an older brother’s experiences with a younger brother who drives him crazy. From Peter’s perspective, his parents’ attention, and that of most of the adults around him, is unfairly focused on Fudge, his three-year-old brother. Fudge’s bad behavior is too often overlooked, and Peter’s good behavior isn’t rewarded. Peter vows to get his parents …

Our new 'Last Chance' feature lets you know about important upcoming deadlines.
This weekend will be your last chance to see Bill Harley at the Firehouse Arts Center. The center will host the return to Pleasanton of Grammy-winning storyteller and musician Bill Harley on Saturday, March 31. Harley will perform two shows, a 2 p.m. matinee for families and an 8 p.m. evening show for adults. The Firehouse Arts Center is located at 4444 Railroad Avenue in downtown Pleasanton. Both shows examine human foibles and simple pleasures in vignettes about school, family and parenting. According to Harley, the adult show observes the world at a deeper level with a more complex series of songs and stories, still humorous and poignant, but from an older perspective. “Adults experience the performance through a double filter of past…
