Pleasanton Approves Walmart Grocery

City Council voted to allow the store to open inside the old Nob Hill space on Santa Rita Road, despite objections from one council member.

The Pleasanton City Council voted Tuesday night to allow a Walmart Neighborhood Market to open inside the long-vacant Nob Hill grocery spot on Santa Rita Road. After months of community back-and-forth and a blizzard of meetings, the council voted 4-1 to allow the store; Councilman Matt Sullivan was the lone dissenter, having brought an 11th-hour appeal to stop it. Those against the store have said the retail giant treats its employees horribly, and they also say they worry about local stores going out of business because of Walmart's famously low prices. In Pleasanton, there are several new stores popping up, including a new Safeway and a possible New Leaf Market. Locally, competition is already fierce. Those who support the store point to…

Owner of The Berry Patch Enjoys New Profitability, Values Downtown Shoppers

Gift shop's prime location plus specialty toys, artwork, jewelry, and handmade items from local artisans help business thrive at The Berry Patch.

Liz Gaouette’s answer to the question of how business has been affected by the downturned economy of the past four years may sound different than many small business owners’ responses. “Anything is better!” said the owner of The Berry Patch at 350-A Main St. “I don’t remember the good old days so my expectations might not be as high.” That’s because Gaouette, a Livermore resident and longtime supporter of downtown Pleasanton, purchased The Berry Patch in June 2008. As the third owner of the business, which first opened in 1994, Gaouette immediately realized she needed a bigger presence downtown. So within a year of owning the store, she moved The Berry Patch from its original location at 63 W. Angela to the prime location at the corner of …

Walmart Delayed in Pleasanton, Pressing Forward in San Ramon and West Coast

While Pleasanton Council member Matt Sullivan put off making a decision on allowing a Walmart grocery here, the corporate giant says its market in San Ramon is slated to open in September.

Walmart's expansion of its Neighborhood Market grocery store chain on the West Coast, including a store in San Ramon and possibly one in Pleasanton, is moving forward even as the Arkansas-based company is facing serious allegations of bribing foreign officials and covering it up in the United States. Pleasanton Councilman Matt Sullilvan decided to put off a decision Monday on whether to allow a Walmart grocery inside the old Nob Hill supermarket spot on Santa Rita Road, wanting more information about these allegations, and how they could impact the city. And yet, construction continues for the Neighborhood Market in the Country Club Village Shopping Center off Alcosta in South San Ramon. The store is planned to open in September, Walmart …

City to Decide on Walmart Grocery Tonight

Councilman Matt Sullivan appealed a Planning Commission decision to allow the grocer; council will hear his arguments tonight at 7 p.m. at the Firehouse Arts Center.

The City Council will vote tonight once and for all on whether Walmart can open up a controversial grocery store inside the long-empty Nob Hill supermarket spot on Santa Rita Road. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the Firehouse Arts Center on Railroad Avenue. The last meeting drew 150 people — more than the City Council chamber on Old Bernal Road can accommodate, and the same is expected tonight. The Pleasanton Planning Commission in March voted to allow Walmart to open up one of its Neighborhood Markets. That decision wasn't an endorsement of the project — it was simply in support of the city's zoning administrator, who ruled that the market would be consistent with rules in place since 1982 that allowed Nob Hill to operate there as a …

That Sullivan character got the vote delayed AGAIN on done technicality so the vote should now happen 5/15. I said SHOULD because we all know that nothing seems to be happening as it SHOULD with this issue no matter which side you're on. I hope Sullivan gets bad diarrhea or something to keep him from the being at the next meeting. Let's just be done with this one way or another.   more ›
