Alameda County Fair Takes Fair Food to Next Level with First Annual 'SNACKDOWN' Competition

A dozen new vendor dishes compete for Grand Champion title. Angel Moore of the Alameda County Fair gives a preview of what's been cooked up at the fair for 2014. The fair opens this week.

It’s a fact. From classic corndogs to deep-fried Twinkies, “crazy-good” food is one of the top reasons people love going to the Fair.

This year, Alameda County Fair is taking “fair fare” to new heights with the first annual SNACKDOWN, a live, competitive event featuring food vendors and their newest creations.

Twelve finalists will compete for the titles of “Best Taste”, “Most Creative” and “Best Theme” (“Taste the Red, White & Blue”).

From those winners, an overall “Grand Champion” will be named.

KPIX’s “Foodie Chap”, Liam Mayclem, will host the event at the Fairgrounds’ Festival Square Stage on Tuesday, June 24 at 12pm.

A panel of esteemed Bay Area “foodie” judges will sample and score each entry to determine the  winners. Interested fans should also watch the Fair’s Facebook page for a chance to win a spot on the judging panel.

“Each year, concessionaires customarily introduce creative new items to their
menus and the SNACKDOWN is way to add some fun to the process, for both the sellers and the food fans”, said Judy Carrico, Fair Operations Manager at Alameda County Fair. “This will be a fun event. All of the finalists are greatand we look forward to seeing who takes the prizes”.

The Fair’s food vendors were invited to participate earlier this year. A first-round judging panel chose the top 12 from the submissions received.

Contestants were allowed to enter as many items as they wished. Entries were evaluated individually and some contestants have more than one item in the final competition.

“SNACKDOWN Finalist” signs will be posted to food stands to help fans identify the contestant dishes they wish to try.
