As Summer Arrives, Here are Events at Chabot Space & Science Center

Highlights include a bike festival June 25, where they'll be using a bike-powered blender to make "spoke shakes" using Fentons Ice Cream.

As summer arrives, here are some events at Chabot Space & Science Center.

Highlights include: a bike festival this Saturday, June 25. They'll be using a bike- powered blender to make “spoke shakes” using Fentons Ice Cream. Bike safety tips and a bike-hike through the redwoods are part of this day from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.

They're also hosting a public viewing (on the MegaDome theater screen) of NASA’s last scheduled space shuttle launch on Friday, July 8. The shuttle Atlantis is currently scheduled to lift off at 8:30 a.m. and the center will have experts and shuttle fans on hand to share this historic launch.

Chabot’s expanded summer hours begin with the summer solstice on Tuesday, June 21, Tuesday-Thursday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. -10 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Expanded Summer Hours Begin Tuesday, June 21

Chabot Space & Science Center is open Tuesday-Thursday 10am-5pm, Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. - 10 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Chabot’s Discovery Lab, an activity room specifically for 2 to 7-year-olds will be open Tuesday - Sunday from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Bike It! A bike festival at Chabot Space & Science Center- Saturday, June 25 (11am-5pm) 

Free with General Admission

Bring your bike and get geared up to experience a Chabot bike-fest. Joined by community bike shops and groups, we're celebrating spokes with hands-on clinics and demos, conversations with bike experts and enthusiasts, guidance on alternate transportation, and bike hikes in the redwoods. At Chabot, we're not just exploring the stars in the sky, we're also discovering the Earth. What better way to explore our land than on a bike.  Learn how much energy it takes to make a milkshake using a bike-powered blender. Fentons ice cream, Chabot’s science and your pedal power make the ultimate spoke shake!

Other highlights include:

-Lego solar bike building

-Test riding bikes for a future purchase

-A space-themed bike skills course

There’s a bike valet for those who would like to explore the Center after riding. Professionals will be on hand to answer questions about fit, helmets, attaching a child tow and more. Family friendly, but you don't have to have a kid to join in on the fun.

Chabot is closed for Independence Day Monday, July 4th

Space Shuttle Launch Viewing Friday, July 8 (8:30am scheduled launch)

The final space shuttle launch is scheduled for 8:30am. Chabot will show the launch on the MegaDome Theater screen, and show it live throughout the Center. Join us for this historic launch which is the last of the shuttle program.

Water Rockets –Tuesday, July 5 through Friday, August 5 (1pm-4pm)

Free with General Admission

Use air pressure and water to propel 2-liter bottle rockets into the sky. Decorate your rocket, and then we’ll help you safely launch it up to 50 feet in the air! It’s a fun, scientific way to beat the heat and cool off.

Slumber with the Stars A Family/Group overnight (7pm Friday, July 15 -10am Saturday, July 16)

Spend a night under the stars or with some really cool exhibits. Join us for Slumber with the Stars, Chabot’s family night out. An overnight in our museum includes exhibit exploration, shows, hike in the redwoods and viewing through our historic, large telescopes (weather permitting). It’s an experience your family will remember for a lifetime. We require a minimum of one adult for every five kids. Minimum age of participants is 5 years old. Tickets Start at $75 Members/$85 Guests. Special pricing available for families of four or more.  Advance reservations required. To register call (510) 336-7373

Moonlight Hike Friday, July 15 (7:00pm- 9:30pm)
Hike the hills under the glowing light of the moon. Join us for a moderately strenuous yet serene 5 mile hike in our backyard, the redwoods. Guided by an experienced hiker,  participants will begin and end the hike at Chabot Space & Science Center. Your guide will meet you in the main lobby. After the hike, stay and view the night sky through Chabot's telescopes.  Hike will take place rain or shine.  Meet at the Center at 7:00pm. The hike departs from Chabot's front entrance lobby. This is 4 - 5 mile hike with some hills, at a moderate pace. The hike returns to the Center at 9:30 pm.  Tickets: $7.00 (does not include admission into the Center) For Tickets call (510) 336-7373. Coffee with the Stars -Friday, July 15 (7pm-10pm)

We’re brewing some special star breaks this summer. Stargazers on Chabot’s observatory decks can warm themselves with free coffee courtesy of Peet’s Coffee & Tea.

Kitchen Chemistry -Saturday, July 23 (11am-5pm)

Activities are free with general admission

From the lab to your lips, join us as we host Fenton’s Creamery and Peet’s Coffee & Tea for a day of Kitchen Chemistry.   Chabot’s teen volunteers, the Galaxy Explorers will lead edible and inedible concoctions and demonstrations as visitors observe the chemical transformations. Create chemical reactions with acids and bases, slime, food, candy, plants and more. From the garden to the table, science is present in all aspects of food and beverage growing and preparation. Learn how to turn the kitchen into to a laboratory.
