Foodies Rejoice: Dishcrawl Launching in Pleasanton Next Week

Get to know your neighbors as you sample food and meet the chefs from several downtown restaurants.

If you savor a good meal and revel in the opportunity to try new dishes, a Dishcrawl event will allow you to do just that -- all while getting to know like-minded residents in town.

Dishcrawl, a start-up originating in New York that aims to build community around food, is coming to Pleasanton for the first time on Tuesday.

At a typical Dishcrawl outing, participants spend about 45 minutes each at four restaurants, getting to know one another and meeting with the owners and chefs. Cooks get to decide which dishes to show off.

"It's all about bringing people together (to) learn new things about each other and enjoy good food," said Dishcrawl's John-Michael Cordero.

By engaging residents passionate about food with those who provide food in their neighborhood, the goal in the end is to "make the community closer and tighter-knit," he said.

The Tuesday event begins at 7 p.m. and late-bird tickets cost $27 each. Participants (families welcome) have until the cancellation deadline to reserve their seats -- in this case Sunday. Once the attendee list is finalized, an itinerary of restaurants and the meeting place is emailed to guests.

Dishcrawl chose Pleasanton as one of its new locations because of the city's burgeoning food community and variety of restaurants.

"There are a lot of food options downtown and in surrounding neighborhoods," Cordero said.

The organization hopes to make Pleasanton outings a regular feature scheduled on the last Tuesday of each month, dubbed "Last Tuesdays" after the city's "First Wednesdays" summer street festivals.

Other Bay Area cities that have hosted dishcrawls include Berkeley, San Francisco and San Jose.

One lucky Pleasanton Patch reader can experience Tuesday's dishcrawl for free! The first person to e-mail jenniferlcourtney@gmail.com about the offer will be given a code to be applied on Dishcrawl's website for one free ticket.
