On Your Mark, Get Set...Raise Some Money

Get in shape for summer and help local charities by participating in a 5K or 10K run, walk or hike.

 It's road racing season and while there are plenty of runs and walks to choose from, it's always nice to find events that support local charities.

Patch collected a list of fun runs, walks and other events in the Tri-Valley and beyond at which you can get in shape and raise money for community organizations.

April

Event:

When: 8 a.m. Saturday

Where: Bishop Ranch 2 and Iron Horse Trail

2600 Camino Ramon, San Ramon

What It Supports: March of Dimes, full-term pregnancies

Participate in a three-mile walk for the Bay Area’s division of March of Dimes “March for Babies.”

Event:

When: 8:30 a.m. Saturday

Where: Sunol Regional Wilderness Park

1895 Geary Road, Sunol

What It Supports: Hope Hospice

Hike For Hope is a non-competitive, memorial hike along the trails of Sunol Regional Wilderness. Hikers participate in memory or honor of a loved one.

Event:

When: 9 a.m. Saturday

Where: 

1119 E. Stanley Blvd., Livermore

What It Supports: Arthritis Foundation

This is the fifth annual arthritis walk. In addition to the walk, the event features entertainment, a kids zone with bounce houses, arts and crafts and food.

Cost: Each team member asked to raise $100.

May

Event:

When: 8 a.m. May 1 

Where: 

400 Hartz Ave., Danville

What It Supports: Oakland Children's Hospital and Research Center

Competitive runners, walkers, families and local businesses are invited to strut their stuff for a good cause. Choose from two flat and fast courses, a 5K and a 10K, on the Iron Horse Trail. One hundred percent of the entry fees will benefit Northern California's only independent children's hospital. The event will include a kids fun run with non-competitive 50- and 100-yard dashes for ages 3 to 8.

Cost: $32 in advance, $37 day of race; $13 for the kids fun run in advance, $15 day of race.

Event: Bras for the Cause Breast Cancer Walk

When: 5:30 p.m. May 7

Where: 

1155 Santa Rita Road, Pleasanton

What It Supports: Finding a cure for breast cancer.

This year is the sixth annual Bras for the Cause Breast Cancer Walk. It includes a 10K walk and a bra-decorating contest.

Cost: $50, all participants must raise $200 minimum.

Event: CPOA Memorial Run

When: 7:30 a.m. May 7

Where: 

2500 Stanley Blvd., Pleasanton

What It Supports: C.O.P.S., Concerns of Police Survivors, Northern California Chapter

Choose between a 5K, 10K or kids 1-mile fun run but don’t forget to register by end of the day May 3. All participants receive a T-shirt and awards will be given. There also will be a raffle and barbecue after the race. Non-race participants can attend the barbecue, $10 for adults and $7 for ages 12 and younger.

Cost: $30 in advance, $35 on race day. Kids fun fun, ages 12 and younger, $10 in advance, $15 on race day.

June

Event: Hook and Ladder Run

When: 6:30 a.m. June 5

Where: 

5050 Arroyo Road, Livermore

What It Supports: The Livermore-Pleasanton Firefighters Foundation

Register before June 2. There are three course options:  5K, 10K and a 1-mile fun run for children. Awards will be given.

Cost: $30 in advance, $35 on race day. Kids fun run, ages 12 and younger, $10 in advance, $15 on race day.

Event: Pleasanton Rotary Spirit Run

When: 6:30 a.m. June 19

Where: Under the arch in downtown Pleasanton, near the Veterans Memorial Building, 301 Main St.

What It Supports:

Run a fast, flat, certified 5K or 10K course that includes portions of the Arroyo Trail. There is also a kids challenge option, which consists of a sprint down Main Street.

Cost: $25 for elementary and middle-school students, $35 for high-school students and adults, or $25 each for four or more. Kids challenge is $10 for ages 2 to 8.
