Saying Goodbye to the Shadow Cliffs Water Slides

The slides are being disassembled and cleared away.

Drivers passing the Shadow Cliffs water slides on Stanley Boulevard in Pleasanton have likely seen the demolition of the bright blue flumes. The break-down began earlier this week and will be finished sometime today, East Bay Regional Parks officials said.

Opened in 1981, the once popular water recreation area, which has become more and more dilapidated over time, is being cleared away after sitting unused.

Kelly Barrington, the Chief Maintenance and Skilled Trades, said that 80 percent of the debris from the demolition will be recycled as part of the City of Pleasanton and 'Green Halo' recycling requirements.

Barrington says the flumes will not be recycled because they are fiberglass.

"The non-recyclable materials will go to Vasco Road landfill in Livermore," Barrington said. "The concrete will go to Vulcan Materials in Pleasanton, the steel and metals will go to various recycling places and the wood and brush will be taken to Biofuels in Livermore."

According to Barrington, no plans have been made for the land once the demolition is completed.

"Phase two of the project will happen when the Design and Construction Department under the district board will work on creating a site plan for the park," Barrington said.

In February, the East Bay Regional Parks District were unable to find a suitable developer to upgrade the slides and they recommended closing them for permanently.
What do you think the East Bay Regional Parks District should design for that land? Will you miss the slides? Tell us in the comments section of the article.
