Justin Bieber Concert Diary

Saturday's show in Oakland will be a night to remember for one Pleasanton girl on her 11th birthday. Share your concert story, too!

Patch editor Kari Hulac took her daughter Lacy to her first concert, Justin Bieber, Saturday. This is their J.B. concert diary.

The Aftermath, Oct. 7, 8:10 a.m.: Lacy is still asleep. She was so excited after we got home she probably didn't get to bed until 1 a.m. I think it's safe to say the show was everything she dreamed of and more, but I'll let her sum it up for you in her own words when she wakes up.

As a parent, it was a great first concert experience. Safe, clean fun — a family friendly polite crowd of mostly moms and daughters.

And Justin Bieber put on a great show. He clearly is not some manufactured pop star like the kind Disney keeps churning out. He can truly sing and he showed off his talents on the piano and guitar. He seems to be safely making the difficult jump from child YouTube sensation to a more grown-up artist, with a harder rock sound and some rougher, tougher darker images accenting his set and show — all without losing his sense of humor and fun.

But more importantly, he came across as truly thankful to his fans, gracious about his success and conscious of his rise to role model, sharing that he came from nothing, a kid without money from a small town in Canada who, by believing in his dream, achieved it.

Sunday, Oct. 7 , 10:37 a.m: After the best concert ever and seeing Justin Bieber, Carly Rae Jepsen and Cody Simpson, I am exhausted. I tried to film as much as I could, so I got some shots of Justin. It was loud and fun, and I got a shirt and a hat that says SWAGGY so thank you so much, Mom, it was super fun!!!!!!

The Prelude

Friday, Oct. 5, 9:24 p.m.: My daughter is one die-hard Justin Bieber fan. She sings his songs in the shower, has his photos all over her walls and knows exactly, including the hospital room number, the day and time he was born.

So when I found out he was playing a show in Oakland on her 11th birthday (Oct. 6, 2001, Alta Bates hospital, 8:19 p.m.), I knew that seeing him perform live would have to be her present.

I resisted for awhile. She and I looked at tickets briefly, thinking she could bring a friend, but the price of three seats was beyond my budget.

But I finally caved. It was just too perfect of a gift. So, without telling her, I secretly bought tickets for just the two of us, rationalizing that I'd end up spending about the same amount if I threw her a traditional b-day party with her friends.

I got the ticket printed on an edible cake sticker, stuck it on her cake and surprised her with it after her birthday dinner. (See accompanying video.)

"Really???" I'm really going??" she said, her eyes wide as saucers. She then promptly ran into her room to post the news on her Instagram. ("Facebook is so last year, Mom!")

Of course now, I realize, this means I, too, am going to see Justin Bieber. Yikes! Hmmmm, thousands of screaming girls. Note to self: Buy some earplugs.

Friday, Oct. 5: 10:19 p.m.: Hi :) My name is Lacy. I LOVE Justin bieber. I know everything about him, just ask me anything ;) I remember looking at the cake and screaming inside my head. I couldn't explain what I was feeling when I realized I was actually going to see the real Justin Bieber. I freaked out and had to tell all my friends. Ya never know. It could happen to you. THX MOM

Saturday, Oct. 6, 8:52 a.m.: Today's her birthday! We blasted up the Beatles "Today's Your Birthday" song on YouTube while dogs barked like crazy. They hate it when we dance.

Read the comments below on our diary. Jeez, people, lighten up. We're having fun and enjoying life. (P.S. She doesn't have a smart phone. It's an iPod touch.)

Lacy just brought in the life-sized J.B. cutout behind me and startled me. Man, he's tall! Next stop: hair salon to get her massive tangles out. (She actually wants to "look nice" for tonight.) She's not a girly-girl kid so anytime she concedes to any hair care, it's a major victory for Mom.

Saturday, Oct. 6, 8:58 a.m.: Hi it's Lacy again. I have my whole day planned out like I usually do! First we're heading down to Noah's bagels for a yummy birthday bagel. Then we're getting my hair done, then buy some makeup and then we're going to Target with my 25 dollar gift card.

9:13 a.m.: OMG I just got a phone call from my best friend Jessica. Her mom surprised her. She's going to the concert too!!! I'm even more excited!!!!!

4:51 p.m.: After shopping, lunch at Habit and some dress up time at home, we're finally ready to go to the one and only Justin Bieber concert on my birthday.

Her reaction to the ticket on the cake was classic! Loved it.

OK, really cute cake, sweet girl (Happy birthday, Lacy!), but, a picture of Justin Bieber really needs to be next to the word "annoying" in the dictionary. I, for one, can't WAIT until people say, "...Justin WHO????" Bieber-boy doesn't realize it, but, that day is coming.

In 10 years, we will probably be hearing how Justin Bieber went the way of Clay Aiken, or Lance Bass, or even Danny Pintauro for that matter.
Pop Culture is pretty much based on one fad replacing another. And since it is geared to the youth culture these days more than the rest of us geezers, those kids' choices for their cultural icons will prevail over those we had when we were their age, back in the days when we were dressing in all black clothes and listening to remixes by The Cure and Depeche Mode, but I digress.

Hate often comes with jealousy. People are often jealous of his fame, talent, and popularity. At 18 years old he gives back a lot more to charities and children hospitals than any of us ever have. No, I am not a fan of his music but I am fan of his personality and intentions. In 10 years, he will be at the top of his game if he's not already and laughing his way to the bank :)
On another note, Happy belated birthday Lacy may you have many many many more to come! Wish you a life full of happiness and good health. Hope you enjoyed the concert and didn't lose your voice :)

People who read it?

Nor is your lack of tolerance for the opinions of others, Sarah. Just for the record though - I don't hate Justin Bieber; I simply find him extremely annoying. No need to go on the attack when others simply voice their differing opinions. It's called maturity.
Janice P Ellis October 7, 2012 at 02:29 pm
Glad your daughter had such a wonderful birthday, Kari. And, thank you for sharing your observations about Justin. It has helped him fall considerably on my annoyance factor scale. His really is a rags to riches story.
Hannah October 8, 2012 at 11:32 pm
Oh my goodness. Sure you're entitled to your opinions but this is about a girls birthday present and how happy it made her! In this case it's definitely nicer and more appropriate to keep your opinion to yourself. I think it's actually pretty selfish you decided to add that to your comment. Aside from that, you didn't even justify your opinion with reasons. And finally, no one is ever gonna be like "Justin WHO?". He may become less famous, and less popular, but it will be a LONG time 'til people are confused when you bring up the name Justin Bieber. His career hasn't begun to fizzle out even slightly, and he's in basically the hardest transition of his life. With that fact, he's carrying on and sticking to his beliefs and his values. This should tell you something about how long it's gonna be before he stops sharing his talents with the world. Oh, and don't say "Bieber-Boy doesn't realize it" like his only hope is that he'll be famous forever. His goals with his career, are to stay grounded, to make people happy, and to do what he loves! Not to sit around making money and putting himself on the cover of every magazine. Stop pretending like you've even logically thought his motives and his persona through, and stop finding pages like this, just to express your uneducated opinion about him.

Justin Bieber's music makes him puke: http://ow.ly/egzvO

It may come as a surprise to you, Hannah, but, everyone is entitled to express their points of view here. No need to attack mine because it differs from yours.
Sandra October 9, 2012 at 07:54 pm
Needing the last word are you Janice P Ellis? - who the hell cares whether you like JB or not - the story was not put out on the patch so you can voice your annoyance with JB - did you have to comment? No....so keep your snide remarks to yourself. It was simply a lovely story about how excited Lacy was to see Justin in concert. Wasn't there once a movie that had the line "if you can't say something nice don't say nothing at all".....maybe you should take note.
Janice P Ellis October 9, 2012 at 11:31 pm
Perhaps you should do the same, Sandra. Your comments are mean-spirited at someone who simply voiced an opinion. The keep your snide comments street runs both ways. I could care less about having the last OR the first word, but, NO ONE likes being attacked for simply voicing an opinion. Your attack here was completely unnecessary.
I agree, it WAS a lovely story about Lacy attending a concert, and I did address that, as well as wished her a happy birthday AND commented about how cute her cake was. Please stop trying to be the comment police and learn to just respect the opinions of others, even if you don't agree with them.
Hannah October 10, 2012 at 12:28 am
It may come as a surprise to you, Janice, but, I'm not arguing about your opinions, I'm arguing about the fact that your opinions aren't supported at all. I suggest rereading my reply to your comment again, so you can really feel how completely wrong you are. Try not to be so embarrassed next time you're this wrong... 'cause, as you've done here, you've just proven yourself to be more wrong. I didn't tell you to love Justin Bieber, but simply to not be unnecessarily mean, and to stop insulting things you aren't educated about. If you'd just said something like "I don't like Justin Bieber's music because it's not my style and his voice doesn't appeal to me." I would be more understanding. I'd still be annoyed that you decided to express your opinion here... but it's your life, and if you decide to be unnecessarily mean... well, you're entitled to that, however much I personally disapprove. But, instead of saying something like my example comment, you just spouted some random dumb opinion, and, here's my issue with you, attempted to back it up with a ridiculous completely unsupported prediction about his future (because you clearly realized how random and inappropriate expressing your opinion would be in this setting). Aside from all this, you don't need to love him, but I think it would definitely be fair for you appreciate the fact that he is a good natured person who has given A LOT of money to charity, and has made millions of people happy.

Sounds like you ladies need to try decaf or posting later in the month. In any case opinions are neither right nor wrong. It's also been said that opinions are like a$$holes; everyone has one. Have a good night, girls.
