Sprouts & Shutters: Specialty's Cafe & Bakery Replacing La Palapa

Construction appears to be underway at the building once home to the La Palapa Mexican restaurant. A sign was recently posted announcing that Specialty's Cafe & Bakery will soon be filling the empty restaurant space at 5331 Hopyard Road in Pleasanton.

There are 22 Northern California Specialty's Cafe & Bakery locations, including one nearby in the Stoneridge Shopping Center in Pleasanton, and the corporate office located at 5050 Hopyard Road, according to the company website.

The eatery offers soups, salads, baked goods, breakfast. and free wi-fi. An opening date for the restaurant is not yet known. 

Specialty's Cafe & Bakery has not yet been reached for comment about an estimated opening date. 

The short-lived La Palapa was touted as the "the new and improved El Balazo" replacing the infamous Mexican restaurant owned by Marino and Nicole Sandoval, the Pleasanton couple who were convicted of fraud in 2012.

The 5,500 square foot restaurant space has been listed for lease by the Lockehouse Team since 2013, according to the Lockehouse Team website. The Lockhouse Team has also listed the Mama Rosa's location, which had been leased by the family of Marino and Nicole Sandoval.
