Sprouts & Shutters: Walmart Neighborhood Market Grand Opening

Whether you love it or hate it, Walmart has set up stakes at a second location in Pleasanton. In May, Walmart put out a call to hire 65 employees for the new Walmart Neighborhood Market in Pleasanton. 85 new employees will work at the grocery chain, which will be open for business as of July 17.

According to a statement released by Walmart, this store, located at 3112 Santa Rita Road, is one of 24 stores throughout the country scheduled to open on Wednesday.

Just one year ago, after much community debate, the Pleasanton City Council voted to allow the Walmart grocery store to open in the vacant Nob Hill Foods building.

The Walmart Neighborhood Market will sell groceries, some organic items and will have a pharmacy. 

In the statement issued by Walmart, Pleasanton Mayor Jerry Thorne said of the new store, "We are thrilled to welcome Walmart Neighborhood Market to Meadow Plaza. The neighboring residents and businesses have waited in anticipation for this new grocery that will serve the immediate community.”

Walmart store manager Alton Wheeler is hosting a ribbon cutting at 7:30 a.m. on July 17 and representatives said that during the ceremony, Walmart will present grants on behalf of Walmart to community groups in Pleasanton including: Pleasanton Police for their Community Outreach Program, Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department for their safety and education program, Open Heart Kitchen, Axis Community Health, Pleasanton Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Pleasanton American Legion and Harvest Valley Christian Church.

This new store, which is one of 250 of the "Neighborhood Markets" in the United States, was preceded in Tri-Valley by the recent San Ramon Walmart Neighborhood Store in September of 2012.

Wheeler commented in the statement, “We look forward to greeting customers, sharing everything our new store has to offer and celebrating with the community when we open our doors July 17. Our grocery products and merchandise are offered at Walmart’s famous Every Day Low Prices and I look forward earning the community’s business.” 

A traditional Walmart store is located at 4501 Rosewood Drive in Pleasanton.
