Sprouts & Shutters: New yogurt shop, new sandwich shop and more

Find out which retail shops and restaurants have opened up in your neighborhood.

Several retail stores and eateries are popping up in Pleasanton, perhaps a sign of things to come as the economy rebounds. Here is a Patch round-up of new places to eat and shop in town:

Berry Tree is the new frozen yogurt shop at Valley Plaza. It opened just three weeks ago and carries a selection of organic yogurt.  Berry Tree touts organic and all-natural ingredients in its products. The shop is just the latest among a number of frozen yogurt ventures in Pleasanton.

Mr. Pickles arrived at Hopyard Village about a month ago and it was hard to miss. An employee dressed in a pickle costume waved at motorists and passersby at the corner of Hopyard and Valley. The sandwich shop is part of a chain with 42 locations across Northern California and Nevada.  The shops are well-known for their home-made sauces and free cookies with every sandwich purchase.

Aunti Gluten's Bakery will be opening a location in the same plaza as Wash-Time Car Wash. The bakery sells gluten-free goodies like cupcakes and cakes.  The store also has another location in LaFayette. Take a look at its menu here

Heroes and Villains Comics just opened on Main Street right next to Gay 90's Pizza Co. The shop carries big-name comic books like Marvel, DC, and Dark Horse as well as independent comics. The grand opening is on April 10.

Express Fitness got a new neighbor with the opening of Iron Horse Nutrition. Owned by long-time resident Tim Massie, the store has all the vitamins, supplements, and nutrition bars you might need to either lean down or bulk up. Iron Horse Nutrition also plans to provide tanning services in the near future.

The most recent shutters in the past month did not come as a surprise. There was talk of Nob Hill Foods going away before it finally shut and took down the bright red signage.

Hollywood Video at the Amador Shopping Center was one of 760 stores shut down around the country after its parent company Movie Gallery filed for bankruptcy. The store had a final sale at the end of March and has officially cleared out.

Finally, Taqueria El Balazo has the unique distinction of being in both the shutter and sprout categories. Last month, the El Balazo stores in Pleasanton were shut down along with other locations in Danville, San Ramon, Concord and Lafayette. A Contra Costa Times  story said tax issues may be a reason for the closures. The Pleasanton stores, one on Rosewood and the other on Hopyard, have been reopened.
