Sprouts & Shutters: Mia Malcolm, JAMS Music, Local Toys and More

Here's the latest roundup of retail, restaurant and other business news and happenings in the Tri-Valley area.

Wondering what’s moving into your neighborhood shopping center? Our weekly Sprouts & Shutters column highlights the latest Tri-Valley restaurant, retail and other business news.

Livermore's new Paragon Outlets already has a new owner and a new name. Simon Property Group, which also owns the Stoneridge Shopping Center in Pleasanton, announced last week that it acquired Paragon Outlets. The outlets will now be called Livermore Valley Premium Outlets. For more information and to read the full press release, visit simon.com.

You can “shop local” in more ways than one at Livermore’s Cooleykatz Toys. The toy store, located on Second Street in downtown Livermore, is not just locally owned—it also sells locally produced toys. The “ABC Around the World” board book was created by Livermore resident Derek Deselms. Livermore dyslexia tutor Roma Chadha and Livermore illustrator Dorla Dougherty teamed up to produce colorful educational flashcards. And Livermore resident Harry Nelson, a retired mathematician and scientist, is the brains behind many popular “ThinkFun” and “Science Wiz” games such as Rush Hour and the new Cool Circuits. For store details, visit cooleykatztoys.com.

Mia Malcolm, a new “design library,” is set to open in downtown Pleasanton next month. Owner Marissa Frandsen decorates the homes of many prominent clients, including the CEOs of Food Revolution and Tinyprints.com. She’s also a furniture designer, offering innovative, sustainable furniture created with wood reclaimed from old North Carolina mills. The new Mia Malcolm occupies the “little striped house” on W. Neal Street next to Baci Café. Learn more at miamalcolm.com.

If your daughter wants her bedroom walls “princess pink,” you have a new paint store to browse. The national paint retailer Sherwin-Williams, which got its start way back in 1866, opened recently on Johnson Drive. For store details visit sherwin-williams.com.

In the market for a new guitar? Dublin’s new JAMS Music, located in the Lamps Plus Plaza on San Ramon Road, sells acoustic and electric guitars, bass guitars, guitar amplifiers and musical accessories. The new store also offers instrument repair and will soon add three lesson rooms for private instruction in guitar, bass, piano, brass, woodwind, violin and other instruments. Learn more at jamsmusicdublin.com.

San Ramon’s Loard’s Ice Cream was a victim of the recent storm: Owner and San Ramon resident Brannon Hills says he was forced to close his ice cream store because of leak-related damage and related contract disputes. Hills says  hopes to reopen a Loard’s Ice Cream shop elsewhere in San Ramon. We'll keep you posted.

Custom Care Pharmacy opened a second San Ramon location recently on San Ramon Valley Boulevard near Chevy’s. The family-owned pharmacy provides prescription counseling, special orders and custom compounding of medications. Custom Care Pharmacy also has a shop in the Marketplace shopping center and in Pleasanton. Learn more at sanramoncustomcare.com.

Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market, which recently opened Tri-Valley locations in Danville and Pleasanton, may soon close. Tesco, the British parent company, reported that the U.S. stores are a financial drain and that it may sell or shut down all of its nearly 200 stores here. Learn more in Patch's recent story.

Opening Update: McCaulous Home, previewed in an October Sprouts column, is now open in the Danville Livery on Sycamore Valley Road next to Elegant Clutter. The new home store is an offshoot of McCaulous department stores.
