Sprouts & Shutters: Safeway Gas Station Opens

March 2 marked the grand opening of the 24-hour self-service gasoline station.

The much-anticipated Safeway gas station is open for business in Pleasanton. The station, located at 6790 Bernal Avenue, had a "soft opening" on Friday and a grand opening on Saturday, according to one employee.

On Saturday, drivers appeared to be following the balloon-bedecked signs at the entrance to the Gateway Shopping Center announcing the grand opening. Several cars were already at the pumps, taking advantage of those Safeway gas rewards points in Pleasanton instead of having to squeeze in at the oft-crowded Dublin location.

The station experienced a glitch in their computer system around 9:30 a.m., that briefly closed the pumps, but was open for customers about an hour later. Like the Dublin location, there is a small mini-mart with snacks, drinks and restrooms.

On July 25, 2012 the Pleasanton Planning Commission reviewed and recommended approval of the proposal by Safeway for a 24-hour self-service gasoline station.

"I told the developers that a gas station would be much more welcome to Pleasanton rather than a fast food place. This became something that could be considered when the Bernal Shell was sold. I do business in Dublin, so don't specifically drive to Dublin for gas at Safeway. This would be another option not to go to Costco for gas in Livermore however I usually have reasons to be in Livermore so don't make trips just for gas. The gas station that may lose the most from this competition might be the gas station on Main Street. Let the construction begin!"
