Trader Joe's Peanut Butter Recalled for Potential Salmonella

The Food and Drug Administration says Trader Joe's Valencia Creamy Salted Peanut Butter has been linked to 29 cases of salmonella.

Trader Joe’s is recalling its Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter following its link to 29 cases of salmonella from 18 states.

On Saturday the Food and Drug Administration and the federal Centers for Disease Control issued a statement urging consumers to stay away from the peanut butter, especially children under the age of 5, elderly adults and anyone with weak immune systems.

According to the statement, the FDA, the CDC and the state of California briefed Trader Joe’s on the status of the investigation on Thursday and the company agreed to remove the product from store shelves immediately.

The recalled Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter was distributed to Trader Joe’s stores nationwide and on the Internet. The product comes in a 16 ounce, plastic jar with an expiration date of stamped below the lid. Production and distribution of the item has been suspended while the FDA and the Valencia Peanut Butter supplier continue their investigations.

Salmonella can cause fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain and in rare cases can be fatal to children, the elderly and those with weak immune systems.

Consumers are encouraged to dispose of the peanut butter or return it to any Trader Joe’s for a full refund. Customers with questions may contact Trader Joe’s Customer Relations at 626-599-3817.
