Earth Day Event Breakdown
The Pleasanton Library makes Earth Day a month long celebration with community events throughout April.
In 1970 Earth Day was created in order to force environmental issues onto the national agenda and now, in 2011, it is a day celebrated by more than 200 countries worldwide.
Prior to 1970, before the existence of Earth Day, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act, factories spewed clouds of toxins into the air and dumped tons of toxic waste into nearby waterways.
Now, Earth Day helps spread environmental awareness and information to better protect the planet.
