Jockey Killed in Race at Alameda County Fair

Jorge Herrera, 33, was thrown from his mount during a race Thursday at the Alameda County Fair.

Here's information provided by the Alameda County Fair:

The Alameda County Fair Association regrets to announce the passing of jockey Jorge Herrera who died in an unfortunate racing incident. Our heart felt sentiments go out to his family. The entire horse racing community is saddened and will deeply mourn this loss. We hope to establish a tribute that will honor his life and contributions.

Details:

During the last race of the day on Thursday, July 5, jockey Jorge Herrera was killed when he was thrown from his horse. It appears that either his horse or another horse stepped on him, causing severe head trauma.

As is our normal safety protocol, an ambulance was following seconds behind the race, therefore, emergency medical personnel responded immediately.

Mr. Herrera was transported to Eden Trauma Center in Castro Valley in very critical condition where he later passed away.

We are in shock and sorrow. The last death of a jockey that occurred at our race track was 37 years ago in 1975 — Juan Gonzalez.

Very sad. Saw that race and very eerie to see his horse run to the finish without him.

Was this yesterday or today?? We were there today and that horse finished without a jockey on it. The article states it happened yesterday.

I had actually bet on that horse and found it very odd when it ran by sans owner. Very sad to hear that there wasn't a happy ending to this story. RIP

Riding at more than 30 mph on an incredibly nervous and easily panicked thousand pound animal that is about at intelligent as a house cat is terribly dangerous. Jockeys more than earn every penny they make. R.I.P. Mr. Herrera and God keep you and may we all pray that he guide and protect your family.

I witnessed it happen and it was so heart breaking! Stayed to hear the results of Herrera after the race and at the time, it was a broken neck but turned out to be something totally worse, his life, that I was praying wasn't gonna happen.. so sad to hear/witness! At this time, my heart and prayers go out to this 33 year young man!! R.I.P. Jorge; you'll be remembered forever!!! ♥

Sorry to hear this about Mr. Herrera. May he RIP.
@Nadja Adolf yes horses can panic but they are much more intelligent than a cat. I speak from experience as I have spent my life riding and training fast horses...

I was there at the racetrack yesterday and saw it too. It happened so fast and even the track announcer probably didn't realize it at the time because it wasn't mentioned during his reporting. I just saw the riderless horse rounding the turn behind the rest of the horses and knew something was wrong. I learned about it on the 11pm news when I got home. Let's hope he didn't suffer. Rest in peace, Jorge.

They had an "inquiry" following the race. We saw the horse and looked for the jockey. The fall occurred on the other side of the track. We knew something happened, but, had hoped he was alright. We did not hear of it until the next day. God Bless Jorge, his family and all of his dear friends.
