Pleasanton, Schools Celebrate Earth Week

Here's a round-up of Earth Week activities in Pleasanton.

Museum on Main will host a talk on "Sustainability: Then and Now" given by Alviso Adobe Community Park Naturalist Eric Nichols, and Maria Lara from the City of Pleasanton. Both will talk about programs available in the city for teaching youth about stewardship and educating residents about sustainability. The talk will be held at 4444 Black Ave at 7:00 p.m.

Schools at all levels are also participating in Earth Week through a variety of different activities.

Over at Donlon Elementary, students planted seeds, collected recyclables and were encouraged to walk or bike to school. On Friday, teachers will turn off classroom lights at the last hour of the day.

Harvest Park Middle School students brought in aluminum cans and plastic bottles for recycling. The school will also host a grand opening for its new greenhouse. Students are also encouraged to walk, skate or bike to school.

Amador Valley High School's Environmental Club had a showing of Flow on April 21. The film looks at fresh water privatization and how it plays into issues of human rights, pollution and politics.

Next week, the city will be hosting its annual free E-Waste Collection from April 30 to May 2 at the Alameda County Fairgrounds. Residents are encouraged to bring in old electronics on all three days. Pharmaceutical or expired drugs and mercury thermometers can be dropped off on May 1. Times for the collections are:

  • April 30, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
  • May 1, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
  • May 2, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.
