Pleasanton's Summer the Coolest in 10 Years

National Weather Service Meteorologists say that unusual weather patterns across the U.S. have made summer temperatures in Pleasanton unusually low.

According to the National Weather Service, Pleasanton, like other cities in the area, is experiencing a cooler than normal summer. How cool? According to Meteorologist Steve Anderson this is the coolest summer here in 10 years.

"There's been a persistent low pressure system off the west coast," said Anderson. "It gets deep enough and then the cool ocean air comes over the coastal hills into Pleasanton and even all the way in to Sacramento.  And that's been continuing all summer."

The National Weather Service does not keep specific temperatures on Pleasanton but cities such as Livermore were used as proxies to estimate temperature data.

According to that data, the average temperature in July was 72.6 degrees. And June saw average temperatures at 70.4 degrees. The last time Pleasanton saw temperatures that low was a decade ago, in 2000 when summer temperatures averaged 69.9 degrees.

Pleasanton is not the only city seeing unusual temperatures. San Ramon's average high temperature this summer has been 84 degrees - four degrees below the 10-year average of 88 degrees.

And these odd weather patterns are apparently a country-wide occurrence. The East Coast has been unusually hot this summer while the entire West Coast has been persistently cool. This is a flip-flop of usual summer weather in the U.S.

"We've had a stagnant weather pattern across the U.S.," said Anderson.

Anderson is quick to point out that he and his fellow meteorologists see nothing in the odd weather that points to climate change.

"Absolutely not," said Anderson, "Just Mother Nature doing what she wants. It's unusual but not unheard of."

Last summer cities in the area including Pleasanton had about seven summer days in the 90s with a few hot days reaching into the 100s.

This year only a few days have reached the low 90s, and there have been no 100- degree days.

The rest of this week will be consistent with July temperatures.

Today, temperatures are expected to reach a high of 83 and a low of  57 degrees. The rest of the week will be the same, with highs in the 80s and lows in the high 50s.
