Sept. 11 Remembrance in Pleasanton

The Young American Patriots Fife & Drum Corps performed traditional patriotic music on W. Angela Street from Main Street to 1st Street. Local groups work to help support military servicemen and their families.

Various groups commemorated Sept. 11 at the Farmer's Market on Saturday.

The Pleasanton Young American Patriots Fife & Drum Corps marched through West Angela Street playing patriotic songs. Jason Giaimo, the group's leader, explained to the crowd that fife and drum were part of George Washington's army. The group, formed just five months ago, has performed at a variety of local events including last month's pooch parade in downtown and during Danville's 4th of July parade.

In honor of Sept. 11, the Pleasanton Certified Farmers' Market encouraged shoppers to donate $9.11 for the Freedom Alliance Scholarship fund, a group that provides scholarships to children whose parents have been killed or permanently disabled during service in the military. The Pleasanton Certified Farmers' Market will match collected donations of up to $750.

Donations were accepted by Road Warriors 2010 founder Candyce Roberts. The group includes volunteers who run, walk, bike and hike 100 miles throughout the year from Memorial Day through Veterans Day to raise money for wounded veterans and their families.

At the corner of Stoneridge Drive and Tom Burnett Lane, a memorial stood in honor of one of the men who died on United Flight 93, the third hijacked plane during September 11.
