Summer Events at Chabot Space & Science Center

Water rockets, sci-fi and sleepovers — science just became a lot more fun.

Looking for summer activities with the kids? Here are some events at Chabot Space & Science Center.

Highlights include: a public viewing (on the MegaDome theater screen) of NASA’s last scheduled space shuttle launch on Friday. The shuttle Atlantis is scheduled to lift off at 8:30 a.m. and the center will have experts and shuttle fans on hand for this historic launch.

Chabot’s expanded summer hours are Tuesday-Thursday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. -10 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Summer Movies at Chabot

Friday and Saturday nights July 8, 15-16 and 22-23. (6 and 8 p.m.)

DocuFilm Friday nights & SciFi Saturday nights* / free with general admission.

Stop by after work Friday and take in an eye-opening film from The Video Project, or bring a date on Saturday to see that awesome sci-fi movie you missed on the big screen. Check website for weekly shows and times. Sci-Fi shows include one planetarium show or movie

Space Shuttle Launch Viewing on Friday (8:30 a.m. scheduled launch)

Catch the final space shuttle launch. Chabot will show the launch on the MegaDome Theater screen, and show it live throughout the center. Join us for this historic launch, which is the last of the shuttle program.

Water Rockets (Today through Aug. 5, 1-4 p.m.)

Free with general admission

Use air pressure and water to propel 2-liter bottle rockets into the sky. Decorate your rocket, and then we’ll help you safely launch it up to 50 feet in the air. It’s a fun, scientific way to beat the heat and cool off.

Slumber with the Stars A Family/Group overnight (7 p.m. July 15 -10 a.m. July 16)

Spend a night under the stars or with some really cool exhibits. Join us for Slumber with the Stars, Chabot’s family night out. An overnight in our museum includes exhibit exploration, shows, a hike in the redwoods and viewing through our historic telescopes (weather permitting). It’s an experience your family will remember for a lifetime. We require a minimum of one adult for every five kids. Minimum age of participants is 5 years old. Tickets start at $75 members/$85 guests. Special prices for families of four or more. Reservations required. To register, call 510-336-7373

Moonlight Hike (July 15, 7- 9:30 p.m.)
Hike the hills under the light of the moon. Join us for a moderately strenuous yet serene five-mile hike in our back yard, the redwoods. Guided by an experienced hiker, participants will begin and end the hike at Chabot Space & Science Center. Your guide will meet you in the main lobby. After the hike, stay and view the night sky through Chabot's telescopes. Hike will take place rain or shine. Meet at the center at 7 p.m. The hike departs from Chabot's front entrance lobby. This is four-five mile hike with some hills, at a moderate pace. The hike returns to the center at 9:30 p.m. Tickets: $7 (does not include admission to the center). For tickets, call 510-336-7373. Coffee with the Stars (July 15, 7-10 p.m.)

We’re brewing some special star breaks this summer. Stargazers on Chabot’s observatory decks can warm themselves with free coffee courtesy of Peet’s Coffee & Tea.

Kitchen Chemistry (July 23, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.)

Activities are free with general admission.

From the lab to your lips, join us as we host Fenton’s Creamery and Peet’s Coffee & Tea for a day of Kitchen Chemistry. Chabot’s teen volunteers, the Galaxy Explorers will lead edible and inedible concoctions and demonstrations as visitors observe the chemical transformations. Create chemical reactions with acids and bases, slime, food, candy, plants and more. From the garden to the table, science is present in all aspects of food and beverage growing and preparation. Learn how to turn the kitchen into to a laboratory.
