Unemployment Rate Rises in Pleasanton, East Bay

Loss of government jobs leads to an increase in the jobless rate

Cuts in government jobs continue to drag down the employment market in the East Bay.

The California Economic Development Department reported today the jobless rate for the East Bay rose slightly to 11 percent in July. That was up a tenth of a point from the 10.9 percent rate in June.

The unemployment rate for both Alameda and Contra Costa counties was 11 percent last month.

In Pleasanton, the jobless rate hit 5.6 percent in July. That was up from the 5.2 percent rate recorded in May.

Nearby, Dublin recorded a 6.7 percent jobless rate while Livermore posted a 7.2 percent rate last month.

State officials reported the East Bay had 4,000 fewer jobs in July than it did in June. Leading the way was the government sector, which shed 5,600 jobs.

The construction and manufacturing sectors added 3,000 jobs in July.
