Do You Think Interstate 680 Is Too Dangerous?

There seems to be a wave of accidents happening on Interstate 680, with two more happening on Friday. Do you think the freeway has become too dangerous? Let us know in the comments section.

If you headed north on Interstate 680 Friday morning, it probably wasn't a pleasant experience.

An ice cream truck overturned just north of Rudgear Road at about 7:15 a.m. on Friday, blocking three lanes of traffic.

About an hour later, there was another accident near the Crow Canyon exit in San Ramon.

And not just on Friday, but recently there have been a number of accidents on Interstate 680.

In August, a fatal accident on an I-680 on-ramp in Pleasanton claimed the life of a 22-year-old.

About a week earlier, two people died from a fatal accident in San Ramon.

Do you think Interstate 680 is too dangerous? Do you feel safe driving on it? Is this just a bad stretch and the freeway isn't more dangerous than any other? Tell us what you think in the comments section.

I often think that 680 is just a front for Nascar trials. Drivers usually exceed the speed limit, make unsafe lane changes, tailgate, and routinely violate the car pool lane rules. I was stuck in the 9/4 backup/closure when the unfortunate incident happened re the CHP officer, and also Friday's debacle. It took me 2 hrs to get to Walnut Creek from 580 on both those occasions. I wish the Highway Patrol would have more of a presence on 680.

I have to agree with previous posts. It's not the freeway itself it the other people driving. CHP need to be present more and it might get better as far as the speeding, and if a few more of these people that put there make up and do there hair and read in the car get pulled over it will help!

You think 680 is bad - try the 680 /580 interchange..there must be at least two incidents per day on the 580 W connector if not more. Not sure why of all the funding that the state has this connection has not been expanded.

Tires is correct, in fact it is worse in the stretch between 580 and Fremont. At least the portion north of 580 was re-paved and it is a SMOOTH highway....that is just speed freaks and people who don't know how to drive. South of 580 it is a poorly paved highway with those same poor drivers. The interchange at 580/680 was extremely poor design, considering so very many people travel to the south bay. It has also always been under construction for on e reason or another, and as we speak, Caltrans is planning yet ANOTHER mess of a highway as it plans to install more USELESS carpool lanes northbound, just to keep the Sierra Club happy.
