Live Well With Healthy Habits Challenge

Challenge starts August 9 and continues through September 9.

The City of Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce and The City of Pleasanton are sponsoring a month-long event which challenges residents to begin a healthier lifestyle.

Starting August 9 through September 9, participants are encouraged to walk 30 minutes a day.

staff, in sync with the challenge, have committed to drink more water, walk, cut back on caffeine, and eat more vegetables.

"We've been thrilled at the response," said Chamber Board Chair April Mitchell, Director of Marketing for the Alameda County Fair.

The Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce staff can be seen walking daily for 20 minutes while the will be offering "Meatless Mondays" on their K-5 school lunch menus.

The effort, which seems to be gaining speed within the community has caught the attention of ClubSport Pleasanton and Tuff Girl Fitness — both have generously donated prizes for individual participants and companies to win throughout the 30 days.

Pleasanton is known as one of the best places to live, work, and raise a family.

With the new Healthy Habits Challenge, the city hopes to earn its stamp of approval for being one of the healthiest places to live, work, and raise a family.

Participants can sign up anytime during the 30 days and encouraged to continue challenging themselves thereafter.

The Alameda County Fairgrounds Staff have created teams to support and challenge each other. Employees who have signed up have been drinking more water and walking more. It's great to see the staff here support one another on a journey to be healthy! ACFair keep it up! As a parent I am glad that the school district is doing something to provide a healthier lunch option.

Angel, thank you for your comment! It so awesome that the ACFS is participating. It really shows how supporting healthier habits can motivate others. Also "no meat mondays" is a great way to introduce to kids alternatives to lunches.

I'm so disappointed. Excited and motivated, I signed up early, when I first heard of this 'great' idea-event. Sadly, that was the first and last time I heard anything about "Healthy Habits Challenge". I don't live under a rock and I have yet, other than this article, to hear ANYTHING further - no PSA, nothing in the Times (that I've come across) about this. In all fairness, I read or heard that there was a gathering to begin this project - but darned if i can recall the details - and it was AFTER the fact, anyway - too late to join in the fun and keep my motivation going. Again, very disappointed City of Pleasanton and P-town Chamber. IMHO, in this day of email technology, there's no excuse for a lack of communication. The air has totally left this balloon.

Thanks for your feedback Joy. The event has definitely been picking up. The good thing about the challenge is you can sign up anytime throughout the 30 days. It will also promote healthier habits not just during the event, but afterward as well which will make a positive impact on those who participate.

Hi Stephanie -thanks for your speedy reply. I was sooo excited about this & really REALLY need the motivation to accomplish my Healthy Habit. I signed up 7/17/12 with Susie Weiss. And after a final confirming email - nothing :-( I am only now seeing Pinterest boards including one with some really great healthy eating tips - thanks to Pleasanton Patch and some serious Googling. And, look what i just found: ***When is it? Joy, the Pinterest board is great. There is also some helpful information and tips on Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce Facebook page. The page seems to be a great network for getting the help you need during the challenge if you don't already have from their website--and of course Patch will keep you up to date on the latest happenings with the challenge. Programs like this are great motivators for those of us that are looking for a little extra push to get off the couch. We should all be getting in 30 min of exercise and drinking plenty of water every day anyway, but sometimes a little prodding or reward can do wonders. For me it helps to think of it as a lifestyle change and not just eating better or working out more. Then all the positive habits are combined into a total program where each piece reinforces the others. Good luck to all with their fitness goals!

I'm glad that Pleasanton is starting to get "on board" with health minded challenges. I'm a holistic chef as well as a vegetarian cooking insteuctor & chef and years ago I went to the Ciry of Pleasanton with Proposals for healthy cooking classes & was told by Parks & Rec and City Supervisors "we are not interested. We have a Cooking with Trader Joe's class in place .....not enough interest in vegetarian and/or holistic cooking to warrant a class like that." I also proposed a healthy cooking kids camp but was told "kids want to eat meat and bake sugary items." Fortunately, other Tri-Valkey, east bay, contra costa, Marin and SF cities embraced these class offerings. I have released over 100lbs and regained my health and want to help Pleasanton Residents. I have lived here since 2001 and I know there must be other Pleasanton residents who want to learn more about the veg lifestyle or at least learn how to get more delicious plant-based, nutrient dense and cholesterol lowering foods into their lives. I applaud the Elementary school's willingness to implement Meatless Mondays for a month. It would be great if more people would do it too. Great luck with your program. @Chef Lisa Books-Williams - yes! I'd love to learn more. I saw "Forks over Knives" and it made a definite impact on how I view what I eat. I also enjoy 'green' foods, such as green smoothies replacing caffeine in the am. I know there's so much more to learn - does Pleasanton have and/or can you recommend a restaurant close by that serves delicious plant-based, nutrient dense and cholesterol lowering foods?
