Local Football Team Raises $1000 Making Touchdowns

The Pleasanton Junior Football League Raiders team used the money raised to donate toys to children in need.

It's not everyday that a touchdown is worth $1000 to a junior football team. This football season, however, a touchdown or more accurately, 24 touchdowns were worth that plus so much more to one local team of fourth and fifth grade players from Pleasanton and Danville.

The 12 players on the Pleasanton Junior Football League Raiders team used their football season to help children in need by participating in "Touchdowns for Tots."

Coach Bobby Carter says that at the beginning of the season, the parents of the players committed to donating a dollar amount for every touchdown scored throughout the season with the intent that the money raised would be used to buy new toys for those less fortunate.

"The coaches and I wanted to do something at the beginning of the season to give back," Carter said.

Carter says the Raiders teamed up with United States Marine Core Staff Sergeant John Powell and arranged to use the money donated from the touchdowns to buy toys for the "Toys for Tots Foundation."

"Most of the kids were very excited and asked questions about what it really meant [donating to the foundation]," Carter said. "The kids were super pumped about it. One game they only scored one touchdown so they were pretty down. They were rallying to get more touchdowns for the needy kids."

Last week Carter and the boys took the $1000 to Target and bought a load of new toys. Carter says they will drop off the toys in the next few weeks.
