What Did Steve Martin Mean by 'Evil' Pleasanton?

The actor's tweets about Pleasanton have residents scratching their heads.

Steve Martin's tweets this week make you wonder whether the comedian enjoyed his lunch downtown on Main Street or if the lack of bustle got him down.

"Turns out I was in 'evil' Pleasanton. There is also 'good' Pleasanton, where 'evil' Pleasanton goes to shop for gifts and things," tweeted Martin soon after he had been spotted by a few residents at his lunch spot.

The actor and banjo player extraordinaire was sighted at a table on the shaded patio of the , a well-known Mexican restaurant in Pleasanton after sending out Tweets lampooning the low level of crime in :

Errant killer robot just lasered innocent cornfield. ‪#Pleasanton‬

Just about to turn noon in Pleasanton and so far, two armed robberies, one garbage truck mishap, and two births of devil’s spawn.

Crime capital of the United States? pic.twitter.com/8fNTlUN4

The paparazzi in Pleasanton is driving me crazy. There are NONE here.

Well ... excuuuuuussse us!

Pleasanton Patch's editor saw the Tweets earlier and walked up and down Main Street until she found him.‬ Martin, who was sitting alone tapping at his laptop, declined to comment when approached.

His tweets about Pleasanton's crime (or lack of) made it onto an SFGate Blog that said his "visit this week to the East Bay city left him uneasy."

NBC Bay area posted his Pleasanton tweets along with an attempt to sort out the meaning to their readers by writing, "Martin's in the joke business, people."

The website, SFist.com collected the tweets and seemed equally confused about their meanings in its online blurb, "We have nothing against the noted comedian, but, like most male funny men of his ilk (Bill Murray, et al.), we never grasped his brand of humor."

He was in town to appear that evening at the Wente Summer Concert Winery in Livermore.

After the concert, Martin tweeted his thanks to Livermore:

"Last night we got 3,000 standing ovations! One at a time, as audience left mid-show. Ha! A joke. Thanks to Livermore, Ca for a great evening."

What do you think Martin meant by his tweets? Funny or not? Tell us in the comments section.

There's really confusion over this?? That's ridiculous. Of course, he was joking around! He was poking fun of Pleasanton's old school vibe of small towns of the past, just like Craig Ferguson did on his show. Come on, people. Find something else to get upset about.

Funny! He has a odd sense of humor which I appreciate. Its not the first time Pleasanton has been harpooned by a comedian. Google Craig Ferguson's monologue after a visit to Pleasanton, he attacks downtown for not having a Starbucks and for Dean's Cafe having a NEON sign when they aren't even open at night! LOL Hilarious!

well Steve martin IS a comedian after all

I understand Steve. (I think) You Pleasantonians are so used to the name "Pleasanton" -but coming from another city, it makes one LAUGH at the sound of it! I remember moving here and seeing the downtown, that sign, hearing the name, seeing the cars, etc.I told people that I chose to live in Dublin because Ptown just didn't seem real! Like Mayberry! (thus the evil spawn/ killer robot joke) Mr. Martin was obviously looking to "play" with the locals by tweeting while he was in town-he gave his GPS location after posting the photo!. After all, hundreds of people paid hundreds of dollars to go to his performance, so they must be true fans, correct? Following that logic, a true fan would follow his Twitter, and the regular Wente Concert Go-ers know that the artists stay at THE ROSE hotel. Autumn, Editor of Patch (although she is just as beautiful and talented as a Charlie's Angel) did not need to use Charlie's Angel-like skills in order to hunt this guy down. He sooooo wanted to be found. That Tweet about the paparazzi was directed to her mobile phone photo of him. I think it's great he tries to play around with locals while in his performance town: Ptown) P.S. I teased him on a tweet the day after his performance by mentioning the "joke material" he could find by hanging out at Barones Thursdays that night. :)

Evil Pleasanton = The service at Blue Agave.

Steve is very funny. Maybe if he could tweet in the sarcasm font, you'd understand what he was saying.

or the humor-altering beverage called Top Shelf Margaritas. Don't we ALL think we are hilarious when we drink those?
Kerrie Maddock Chabot September 01, 2012 at 03:55 AM
Nah, Cathy...I think the "sarcasm font" is naturally engrained in those who are already sarcastic./ You get the joke. Or you (sadly) don't! Unfortunately, many take things too seriously and fail to see the laughter we (all) have available to us daily. JUST KEEP CALM AND HEAR THE SARCASM! :)

Clearly he was saying "evil"...tongue in cheek.... meaning it seemed a rather pretentious town of forced perfection and on top of this with the name "Pleasant"on?? My Australian friends used to also joke about it.......and our street address was "Fair" Oaks giving them even more to laugh at. Have to admit..it IS funny!

How evil can evil be if it shops for gifts and things :)

Steve Martin's tweets were actually a very friendly gesture. I'm happy with a quiet life myself, but he used his status to give our town advertisement to a rather large audience.

I thought he might be referring to the evil villains in "Tales from Swankville" (remember that fiasco?) I would say quite a few evil people crawled out of the woodwork then. lol

Steve Martin ROCKS! His next adventure will be to confuse the local wildlife in Yosemite while dodging the Hantavirus.

He never struck me as funny
Klinnggon October 04, 2012 at 11:16 AM
Wow pretty sad that people can't take a joke.
Klinnggon October 04, 2012 at 11:19 AM
Some people just have no sense of humor. They cannot sense, or detect, humor even when it written by one of the most successful standup comedians of all time. Baffling how anyone could NOT know he is joking. I mean, what else could he have meant? I am flabbergasted at the author's exhibition of such ignorance.
