Celebrating 40 Years of BART — Share Your Memories

BART has been serving the Bay Area for four decades. How long have you been riding?

This September marks 40 years of BART service in the Bay Area. To celebrate the occasion, BART is gathering memorabilia and encouraging riders to share their own via Pinterest and Flickr.

Planning for Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) began in the 1950s after the Key System had been dismantled.

The first passenger embarked on Sept. 11, 1972 on the first BART line, which ran between MacArthur and Fremont.

BART says we can expect to hear more about the 40th anniversary year in coming weeks, including special promotions and events.

If you decide to use Flickr to share your antique BART photos, remember to use the Creative Commons license and tag photos with BART40th.

Contributions and suggestions can also be emailed to bart40th@bart.gov.

How long have you been riding BART? What do you remember about past decades? How has the service changed? Share your BART memories in the comments below. Have an old photo? Click "upload" to share it.

So glad you got this resolved. When I saw your plea for help, I put in a call to Public Works andRead More they transferred me to Police/Animal Services. They told me that someone had already been dispatched.

Many thanks to Police/Animal Services. Next order of business is to educate residents not to allowRead More ducks to nest on their property that is not adjacent to natural waterways or canals - it may seem cute, but it's cruel when the mama duck loses babies to cats and storm drains.
