What Did Steve Martin Mean by 'Evil' Pleasanton?

The actor's tweets about Pleasanton have residents scratching their heads.

Steve Martin's tweets this week make you wonder whether the comedian enjoyed his lunch downtown on Main Street or if the lack of bustle got him down.

"Turns out I was in 'evil' Pleasanton. There is also 'good' Pleasanton, where 'evil' Pleasanton goes to shop for gifts and things," tweeted Martin soon after he had been spotted by a few residents at his lunch spot.

The actor and banjo player extraordinaire was sighted at a table on the shaded patio of the , a well-known Mexican restaurant in Pleasanton after sending out Tweets lampooning the low level of crime in :

Errant killer robot just lasered innocent cornfield. #Pleasanton

Just about to turn noon in Pleasanton and so far, two armed robberies, one garbage truck mishap, and two births of devil’s spawn.

Crime capital of the United States? pic.twitter.com/8fNTlUN4

The paparazzi in Pleasanton is driving me crazy. There are NONE here.

Well ... excuuuuuussse us!

Pleasanton Patch's editor saw the Tweets earlier and walked up and down Main Street until she found him. Martin, who was sitting alone tapping at his laptop, declined to comment when approached.

His tweets about Pleasanton's crime (or lack of) made it onto an SFGate Blog that said his "visit this week to the East Bay city left him uneasy."

NBC Bay area posted his Pleasanton tweets along with an attempt to sort out the meaning to their readers by writing, "Martin's in the joke business, people."

The website, SFist.com collected the tweets and seemed equally confused about their meanings in its online blurb, "We have nothing against the noted comedian, but, like most male funny men of his ilk (Bill Murray, et al.), we never grasped his brand of humor."

He was in town to appear that evening at the Wente Summer Concert Winery in Livermore.

After the concert, Martin tweeted his thanks to Livermore:

"Last night we got 3,000 standing ovations! One at a time, as audience left mid-show. Ha! A joke. Thanks to Livermore, Ca for a great evening."

What do you think Martin meant by his tweets? Funny or not? Tell us in the comments section.
