Harlem Shake Dance Craze Invades Tri-Valley

Tri-Valley no stranger to latest Internet craze.

Gangnam style is so last year.

The latest dance craze sweeping the online world is the Harlem Shake.

And no, it doesn't have any relation to the 1981-born, original Harlem Shake dance that gained mainstream appeal thanks to early 2000ish hip-hop music.

Rather, this latest flurry of body movements is based on an online video of a group dancing to a 2012-released "Harlem Shake" song by Bauuer, an American DJ and producer. The video went viral and as of mid February has nearly 15 million views on YouTube.

Mashable.com provides a simple, easy-to-digest way of explaining the new Harlem Shake:

The basic premise is always pretty much the same. The song "Harlem Shake" by Baauer begins in a nondescript location that's totally unremarkable save for one person slightly dancing while wearing a mask. Then the line "do the Harlem Shake" comes in, the beat drops and things, well, things just get real weird real fast. Then it all ends after 31 seconds.

Got it?

OK, good. Now check out versions of the Harlem Shake performed by locals in the videos attached to this post, including one at the Livermore Outlets food court, one at an anatomy class at San Ramon Valley High School and another at Rockin' Jump in Dublin.

At a food court? During anatomy class? At Rockin' Jump?

The Harlem Shake knows no boundaries.

I haven't given in yet. For now, I'll stick to my two-step.

Tell us what you think about the Harlem Shake in the comments section below. If you have recorded videos of yourself and friends Harlem Shakin' it up, upload it here to share with other Patch viewers.
