Christmas Tree Recycling Options in Tri-Valley, San Ramon and Danville

Recycle, pick ups, drop offs, or even reuse. Here are some ways to dispose of your tree after the holiday season.

When Santa Clause comes to town and checks his list twice, he knows if you've been naughty or nice, but does he know if you properly dispose of your Christmas tree?

Ah, a question that may have passed your mind after all that eggnog guzzling, gift wrapping and undecorating -- a task which most homes are faced with after Dec. 26th rolls around.

Still in the spirit of giving?

Boy Scouts:

Every year, Dublin Boy Scout Troop 905 holds a holiday tree pickup/recycling fundraiser in your neighborhood with a $5 donation. James Harper, an Eagle Scout and resident of Dublin praises the troops' dedication.

"I'm familiar with the community service efforts of the Boy Scouts and I know how important these programs are to the development of the kids involved. Boy Scouts rely on the generosity of the community and fundraising efforts such as this to support their success," he said.

Reservations are required for the pickups and are taken until January. If you'd like to help support Dublin's Boy Scout Troop 905, all other info can be found on their website.

Pleasanton's Boy Scout Troop 941 & Venture Crew 941 will be out in force on Saturday, Jan. 5. Register and donate here or call their voicemail service at (925) 399-1377 and register your reservation.

To register for pick-up: Dublin, xmastreepickup@dublintroop905.org, Livermore, http://www.scoutgreen.org/ and Pleasanton, http://tree-pick-up.troop941.org/. In San Ramon visit www.sanramonscouts.org, e-mail sanramontrees@yahoo.com, or call 925-362-8960.

Residential Garbage Services:

AVI (Amador Valley Industries) will come by on your service day and pick up your trees starting Dec. 26th through Jan. 6th. Most cities have pickups available through residential garbage services.

James Young of Livermore explains he "feels an obligation to properly handle disposal responsibly, not just throwing it into a landfill somewhere."

If you want to recycle your tree in your organics cart, you must make sure all limbs and the trunk is cut down so the lid closes all the way. Your organics cart will be picked up on your regular service day.

For any non-recyclable trees including flocked or tinseled, please call (925) 479-9545 for pickup.

Pleasanton Garbage Services says they will pick up tree that are placed curbside on Saturday, Jan. 12. Trees must be placed curbside the night before pickup and cut in four-foot sections. They ask that you remove all stands, tinsel, ornaments and lights.

Debbie Jeffrey of the Pleasanton Garbage Services wrote:

"Place Christmas tree cut in two foot sections inside your greenwaste container and it will be picked up on your regular pickup day. Pleasanton Residents may also bring Christmas trees to the Transfer Station at 3110 Busch Rd. free of charge until February 1, 2013."

San Ramon and Danville

According to the City of San Ramon website, residents can "cut tree into lengths that will easily fit into cart and allow lid to completely close. Place tree pieces into cart anytime after holidays. Or residents can set their tree at the curb for one-time pickup by a special truck. They ask that you cut larger trees into lengths of 6 feet or less.

The City of Danville allows "trees to be dropped off at the curb on your collection day during the week of Jan. 7 through 11, 2013."

For other resources in your area on what to do with your tree, Earth911 has some drop off and pick ups for Tri-Valley residents and beyond. Simply type in your zip code, city or state to find alternative options.

For LIVERMORE residents:
Livermore Sanitation will collect your Christmas tree if placed curbside by 6am on your regular service day during Jan 7 - Jan 18. Please make sure the stand, lights, and decorations have been removed. For tall trees, please cut down into pieces no longer than 5 feet. With the exception of flocked trees, all Christmas trees are recycled into compost. If you have your Christmas tree beyond Jan 18, you can still recycle/compost it. Cut it down to 2-3' pieces and place into your green 'Organics' cart for regular collection, making sure the stand, lights, and decorations are removed. Local Livermore Boy Scouts will also collect trees for a nominal donation on January 5th. Call 925-373-7821 or visit www.ScoutGreen.org no later than January 2nd to register for collection. Your generosity will help send a Scout to Summer Camp! For questions, visit www.LivermoreSanitation.com or contact Livermore Santation at 925-449-7300. For more recycling-related information, visit www.LivermoreRecycles.org.

Any suggestions for disposing of an artificial tree?
Autumn Johnson (Editor) December 27, 2012 at 06:57 pm
I would say donate it to a local charity if it is in good shape.

Cut your tree into burnable pieces and then use it in the firepit in the backyard.
