Bernal Avenue Safeway Employee Cited for Selling Cigarettes to Minor During Police Sting

Pleasanton police conducted a city-wide tobacco sting last Friday.

A Safeway employee was cited for selling tobacco to someone under 18 last week as part of a city-wide sting.

The , in cooperation with the Alameda County Public Health Department, conducted a decoy operation Friday targeting the sale of tobacco products to minors. There are 44 businesses in Pleasanton that sell tobacco products.

The operation conducted yielded only the one citation, at the on Bernal Avenue, inside the new Gateway Shopping Center.

The assistant manager who was responsible for the sale was issued a citation at the scene, according to a press release.

Fines for a first offense begin at $200.00.

While visiting each business, officers also inspected the premises to make sure they were in compliance with mandatory posting of signs about the prohibition of tobacco sales minors. Officers also checked each business to make sure they had a valid Tobacco Retail License.

In order to ensure on-going compliance with the law, the Pleasanton Police Department will conduct similar operations in the near future.
