The Alameda District Attorney's Office will decide if a Pleasanton preschool teacher will face criminal charges for using masking tape to bind the hands and feet of a 2-year-old girl who refused to nap at the Centerpointe Christian Preschool.
In a statement issued Tuesday, Pleasanton police officials say they submitted a completed investigation regarding the incident, which was reported to them on March 4, to the Alameda County District Attorney’s office.
They wrote, via email:
"They [the District Attorney’s Office] have taken the case under submission to determine if criminal charges are appropriate based upon the facts of the case."
Angela Calcagno of Livermore started working at the preschool in June 2008 and is a student at Cal State East Bay studying psychology, according to a staff profile on the Centerpointe website. She is currently being investigated by the Department of Social Services and has been banned from working with children pending the department's final evaluation of what happened.
Patch has been unable to reach Calcagno for comment.
The he had no knowledge of the incident until it was reported to the center and to police. He had already resigned from his post at the school in February.
In an email, Centerpointe Christian Preschool wrote:
"Centerpointe cooperated with the Police Department. We are focusing on the preschool opening tomorrow. Our staff team has had three-and-a-half days of quality training including attendance at the statewide early childhood education conference as well as sessions presented by Las Positas College instructors Laura Reno and Jeanne Virgilio. The staff has made some adjustments to the program to better serve the children and their families. We are looking forward to welcoming them Wednesday."
