UPDATED: Female Pedestrian Dies From Injuries Sustained During Saturday Collision

Police say the woman, who has not yet been identified, died last night as a result of her injuries.

A Pleasanton woman who was hit by a car while she and her husband were in the crosswalk on Santa Rita Road and Francisco Street has died, Sergeant Robert Leong said.

According to Leong, the woman, who is not yet being identified by police, died last night and the cause of her death is not yet known by investigators.

The woman and her husband were both hit by a car driven by a 49-year-old woman from Danville around 8:37 p.m. on Saturday night. Police originally reported that the driver was 29-years-old.

Leong says the husband, who is alert, is still hospitalized at Eden Medical Center in serious condition.

"The the investigation into the cause of the collision is continuing," Leong said.

Leong says there was no evidence of braking at the scene but there were witnesses to the collision.

Leong added, "Her phone was checked at the scene and the officers found a call was not made or received or a text was sent or received at the time."

The Bay Area News Group reported the victim as being identified by the coroner officials as Yizhen Zhou, 65, of Pleasanton.

Anyone with information related to the investigation is being asked to contact the Pleasanton Police Department at 925.931.5100.

Repair crews have been working this week on the installation of new "in-pavement" lighting system in the crosswalk where the couple was hit.

The 'in pavement" light system, which had been slowly failing since the summer, was scheduled to be fully repaired by Oct. 9 but was delayed "due to some construction availability." The other warning systems were all in place and functioning at the time of the collision, according to city officials.

According to the California Highway Patrol, of the 10 collisions reported near the intersection of Santa Rita Road and Francisco Street between the start of 2003 and the end of 2011, two of the accidents involved a car striking a pedestrian and half were the result of unsafe speed on the part of motorists.
