Inmate Commits Suicide at Santa Rita Jail

Alameda County Sheriff's Office investigating suicide at Dublin jail.

Here's information provided by the Alameda County Sheriff's Office:

On Saturday, September 1, 2012, deputies responded to a cell in Santa Rita Jail where inmate Dennis Jimenez, aged 54, was attempting to hang himself.

Deputies entered the cell where Jimenez was the only occupant and cut him from a homemade noose fashioned from a bed sheet. The sheet was attached to the upper bunk of the cell, and Jimenez used his own body weight to cut off the blood flow to his brain.

Santa Rita staff began lifesaving measures at the jail and Jimenez was transported by ambulance to Valley Care Hospital in Pleasanton where he was pronounced dead.

Jimenez had been in custody at Santa Rita Jail since March 11, 2012 when he was arrested by the Oakland Police Department for DUI, theft and drug charges.

Jimenez was released on the DUI and theft charges, but remained in jail to serve his sentence on the drug charge. He was due to be released on September 5, 2012.

Per protocol, Sheriff’s detectives from the Eden Township Substation arrived to investigate the scene, as well as Coroner’s Investigators.

This is just another comment that I greatly doubt will matter, and I have no relation or association with the deceased, but I fault the inhuman treatment society has chosen to impose upon its citizens for drug use. Here is a perfect example: A Dui is a perilous crime, and for it he was released. Theft? There is nothing worse than a thief---yet, for theft , he was released. Now for the crime in which the only victim was himself, and the worry to the system of social caring was the only constituent of concern, this man faced at 54 years, (surely something that ought qualify a man as venerable to at least be not locked in a cage for his own damnation of self-abuses) 6 long, hot, hellish months in a facility to shape one's self-esteem into a decrepit, rotten, pea-sized scrap of fly-spit, and I of adequate social stature do hereby not condemn this soul as cowardly nor weak. This valuable human being is gone because of a rampant neglect of human nature that is sure to diminish the quality of living of every soul in this learning society. Ask not for whom the bell tolls. It tolls for thee. Thanks, Dennis.
