A person was airlifted by helicopter from a major car accident scene on Interstate 680 North near Koopman Road in Sunol, said Officer Steve Creel of the California Highway Patrol.
Around 8:20 a.m., a grey Honda Accord veered across all lands of traffic, then off the freeway and down an embankment where it wrapped around a tree, said Battalion Chief Joe Testa of the .
Several fire departments worked to pull the driver out of the wreckage; it took about 30 minutes, Testa said.
Several lanes were shut down while emergency workers removed the driver, according to patrol logs. To get out of the traffic mess, many drivers turned around and drove the wrong way on nearby ramps.
As of 10 a.m., at least one lane was still closed, but as of 10:45 a.m., they were open.
We will post updates on the driver's condition as soon as we have information.
