A Pleasanton woman and her 13-year-old daughter, rumored to be a student, were shot at their Stacey Court home on Monday evening, police said.
Officers arrived at the home around 6 p.m. and found 37-year-old Amy Freeman Burton dead from a gunshot wound, Police Lt. Jeff Bretzing said at a press briefing at the scene around 11:45 p.m. Monday night.
Her daughter, Ainsly Freeman, had also been shot but was alive. She was taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley where she later died, Bretzing said.
Bretzing said he could not comment on the shooting other than to say Freeman Burton's husband called 911. He was not arrested but is a "person of interest," Bretzing said.
He would not comment on whether it was a murder-suicide or a double killing but did say there is no reason to think there is a killer at large.
Neighbors said the family of three had just moved into the home a few months ago from out of state.
As of midnight, police were still investigating inside the home.

Gun violence in Pleasanton is rare. The last known shooting occurred in but the injuries were minor. There was an attempted shooting during a robbery in 2010 in a Rosewood Drive shopping center, but no one was injured.
