Teenage Stabbing Suspect To Be Tried As Adult

Youth faces prison if convicted in last week's knife attack in downtown Pleasanton.

A 16-year-old Village High School student will stand trial in adult court on charges in the stabbing of two teens last week in downtown Pleasanton.

"He will be prosecuted as an adult," said Teresa Drenick, deputy district attorney for Alameda County.

The suspect, whose name is being withheld due to his age, is scheduled to appear Wednesday at the Gale-Schenone Hall of Justice in Pleasanton on felony charges of assault with a deadly weapon.

His bail is set at $260,000, according to Alameda County Sheriff's Office records.

The double stabbing occurred around 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon on First Street near Village High and the Pleasanton Unified School District offices.

The 16- and 17-year-old victims, a Village student and a student from Amador Valley High School, suffered serious abdominal injuries in the attack and were taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley. According to news reports, the boys are recovering.

The suspect was arrested shortly after the incident at his Bernal Avenue residence by the Pleasanton Police Department and taken to the San Leandro Juvenile Justice Center.

Drenick would not disclose specifics that prompted prosecutors to try the Pleasanton youth as an adult.

Such decisions, in general, are collaboratively made by juvenile- and adult-court prosecutors, who weigh the crime, the offender and the interest of public safety, she said.

A police spoksperson declined to discuss the stabbing or the adult charges, citing the involvement of minors.

In a press release last week, police officials said the victims knew and were able to identify their attacker.

The suspect is expected to appear with his attorney and enter his plea at Wednesday's 2 p.m. hearing.

Arraignment on the assault charges occurred Monday, Drenick said.
