22-Year-Old Killed on Interstate 680 in Pleasanton

CHP reports fatal accident near Bernal Avenue on-ramp to Interstate 680.

Bay City News Service

A 22-year-old woman was killed in a solo-vehicle accident early this morning at a northbound Interstate Highway 680 on-ramp in Pleasanton, according to a California Highway Patrol officer and the Alameda County coroner's bureau.

Samantha Emslander, from Galt in Sacramento County, was in a convertible with another occupant, that crashed into a ditch on the side of the Bernal Avenue on-ramp around 12:20 a.m., according to CHP and the coroner's bureau.

Emslander was killed in the crash, while the other victim suffered unknown injuries, CHP Officer James Evans.

Evans said the driver reportedly had fallen asleep at the wheel. The incident remains under investigation.

Emslander's Facebook profile lists her as a 2007 graduate of Galt High School and working at Raley Field in Sacramento as a ticket operator.

She also posted she is in the U.S. Air Force.

Her hometown's Galt Herald online newspaper included a brief about Emslander in October 2009 after she graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, according to the article.

Sam was an exceptional person, loved by the world she was in. Always brought a smile to your face, no matter the time of day, or day of the week. Sharp, Friendly, a totally classy lady. Her Friends at Raley Field, me included, will miss her very, very much.. Rest in Peace Sam, watch over us, and keep us safe.

I wonder how this accident could of been prevented?? While approaching the on ramp lane was this driver blocked or not let on to the entry lane to the S/B 680@Bernal? Was this driver run off the road or just answering a text or call or drop something? Or even may of been in a disagreement with the passenger as a distraction to AVOID an ACCIDENT perhaps? Sad loss of life as a New Military person to serve her country. What can we do to assist in preventing these types of occurences???

The article says the driver fell asleep at the wheel.

Thanks Dave, how could we prevent that? unusual prescribed drug or too many otc allergy pills? Just getting on the on ramp from Bernal, it's just preventable. I am sorry for everyone's loss Scott. We will miss a soldier as well. They will (CHP/Coroner) find out and hopefully resolve will follow from this fatality.

I don't understand why you're so convinced that there has to be something more to this story than the fact that the driver fell asleep at the wheel. Hasn't her family suffered enough from this loss of life, without some stranger on the internet insinuating that she was abusing controlled substances, or otherwise being reckless? People are often drowsy while driving for the simple fact that they are tired. Please stop needling at this, and let her family and friends have some peace.

OhMamma, I am sorry we perceive this in a negative way. won't we want to learn to PREVENT early deaths? Especially getting behind a live motor vehicle. What happened to the Passenger? What if the vehicle struck a mother with four small infants and they passed as well? Is it really okay for yourself or me to get behind a wheel and operate a motor vehicle exhausted physically and/or mentally? No, I have held dead children in my arms at an accident and wondered why? Then how can we lower this risk and do some EDUCATION and Prevent these further. As above, this is a newspaper, not the family memorial. I hope they place a cross and flowers and mark the spot to remember their loss. To others who did not know this person, it will be a reminder of the loss and "oh, I better be careful around here" In the real world, people are cited and arrested for driving for falling asleep at the wheel. Alot worse could of been the outcome of this dire situation. Out of respect for the family and friends for their loss. We should not see a response. Forgive.

Driver arrested on suspicion of DUI. Were they sisters? God bless. http://m.lodinews.com/news/article_f7edee5c-ea51-11e1-8b7e-0019bb2963f4.html

Wow Save, you are unbelievably calloused and rude. A 22 year old life was just lost and you want to "assume" it was over-the-counter drugs or allergy medication? Why don't you let the family grieve before playing detective of something you know nothing about. You are one sick individual. My condolences to the family. I have a 22 year old daughter and would be in horrific shock if something happened to her. I am so beyond sorry for your painful loss.

She was my girlfriend, and all that matters is she's gone and will always be remembered as the wonderful person that she was.

Dayum, $100k bail. That sounds like a tad more than "suspicion of".

God Eric, I am so very sorry. My heart aches for you.

Renae, how nice your wonderful comments, I was correct, I am a realist PARAMEDIC not a fool, YOU need to be acceptance of REALITY, I already commented so sorry for the losses. SICK for wanting to prevent a DUI? REALLY, you need to wake up and get off your ZANIX script. READ into accidents, This was not an accident it was a PREVENTABLE FATALITY. Poor Eric and Family. Drinking and Driving an motor vehicle really doesn't mix. Atleast no one else was injured.
Save Howe August 28, 2012 at 04:06 PM
Make sure that your 22 old doesn't RIDE within a motor vehicle with another under the influence, IS THAT SO RUDE ? Callused you say, maybe so after losing my 19 y.o. to a similiar incident and never got to see a College Grad. My only son, so sorry Renae. I TEACH PREVENTION OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE, not encouraging others to take their friends lives into their hands. That's why I believe in preventative measures!

Save, you are angry and rightfully so, but making assumptions immediately after someone dies without knowing the facts and posting them here for the grieving family to see is calloused and rude, no matter what your profession.

Save: Please ignore renae like everyone else does. She posts for attention and validation. She's hateful and suffers from envy. She and her family seriously call and consider her "the chosen one". She did the same thing on here after the loss of Michelle Le. It was disgraceful them just as its disgraceful now. How many laws have been passed and lives have been saved as a legacy of those that were lost before they should have been. You see out of such tragedies and from human mistakes can come knowledge You see first hand as a first responder, and i appreciate you pointing out what you thought might have happened so others might learn from this preventable tragedy. If the loss of my loved one had the opportunity to spare others the same fate I would speak openly and loudly. Learning from the tragic loss of life does in no way minimize the sorrow and compassion any of us feel for this young woman or her family. To the family, words cannot ever express the sadness I feel for the loss of your beautiful loved one. I'm am so very sorry for your loss. I also thank you for Samantha's service to our country and an very sorry for the negativity of some of those posting and for their need to turn this tragedy into an avenue to gain attention. Please know these few do not speak for our community and that we all share only the deepest sorrow for your loss.
Pleasanton Mom August 30, 2012 at 02:04 AM
Oh no thou "chosen one". You must stop hurting me like this. I thought you didn't have time for me? Does this mean that I've struck a nerve or said something that is true? I think you are actually the victim thou "chosen one" as you said you are the one being slandered and that you were going to try to have my children taken away from me and that you were going to sue me. How does that make me the victim when you are the one crying about your own words being repeated to you and claiming to be a victim of some strategy to ruin your reputation or make you look a certain way. Have you finally realized that your reputation is exactly what you made it by spewing hate, judgment and by being too good to be around people that are less than you because they don't have money or a home like you do? You know, like those disgusting homeless people that live in campers at some wal-mart that you damn sure don't want near the wal-mart grocery store opening by you. Now thou "chosen one" show some God damn respect for the girl who lost her life and quit trying to hijack this post for your own gain and for attention. You did this when there was an article about Michelle Le and you are attempting to do it now. The only thing you haven't done yet is post a link to your blog which I'm sure is coming because this story is all about you and not about the fact that a family lost a daughter, sister, granddaugter, aunt. Ick.

Pleasanton Mom and Renae: The personal comments between the two of you have been deleted. Please try to keep your future comments centered on the story you are commenting on... in this case, a 22-year-old who died in a car accident.
Renae Wilber August 31, 2012 at 05:17 AM
You are right David, and I will respect that.
