Steven Carlson, charged in the 1984 killing of his Foothill High classmate Tina Faelz, is scheduled to stand trial this fall, according to the Alameda County District Attorney's office.
Carlson, 45, was arrested almost a year ago in the killing of Faelz, who was 14 when she was stabbed 44 times while walking home from school.
His trial date is Oct. 14, at 9:30 a.m., in Dept. 11 of the Rene C. Davidson Courthouse in Oakland, according to Eamon O'Connor of the Alameda County District Attorney's office.
The case took some time to sort out originally because the courts had to decide whether Carlson would stand trial as a juvenile or an adult. He was 16 at the time of the slaying.
Police tracked Carlson down thanks to new DNA technology that wasn't available at the time of the killing. They were able to identify blood on a purse found hanging from a tree at the killing scene as being from Carlson.

Carlson, 45, is being held without bail at Santa Rita jail.
