Early Morning Vegetation Fires Keep Fire Crews Busy

Fire officials say at least one of the fires was caused by fireworks.

Information from the Livermore Pleasanton Fire Department--

On Monday July 1, 2013 at 0:20 AM, Livermore Pleasanton Fire Department responded to multiple reports of a vegetation fire at two separate locations.  Callers reported a fire at 680 and Bernal and others reported a fire at 680 and Sunol.

The first fire was located on the onramp from Bernal Ave to southbound 680.  The second fire was found on the onramp from Sunol Bl. to northbound 680.  The Bernal Av fire was 50’ x 50’ and was quickly extinguished.  The Sunol Bl. fire burned one quarter of an acre before it was extinguished.

The Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department was assisted by Alameda County, Camp Parks, Cal Fire, CHP, and Pleasanton PD.  Between the two fires a total of 6 engines, 1 water tender, 1 Dozer, and 1 Battalion Chief responded.

The cause of the fire at the Bernal onramp is undetermined; the fire at the Sunol onramp was caused by fireworks.

The Pleasanton Police and Livermore Pleasanton Fire Departments wish everyone a happy and safe 4th of July. Many Pleasanton residents participate in private 4th of July celebrations that include both safe and sane and illegal fireworks.

Unfortunately, it is estimated that 9,600 people are seen at emergency rooms due to injuries sustained through the use of these devices. Over half of the fireworks victims are under the age of 15. In addition to the numerous injuries, millions of dollars in property damage occur due to unintentional fires caused by fireworks.

The Pleasanton Police Department and the Livermore Pleasanton Fire Department want to ensure everyone has a safe Independence Day and remind you that ALL FIREWORKS, INCLUDING SAFE AND SANE, ARE ILLEGAL IN PLEASANTON. Violations are taken very seriously and violators can expect to receive a citation and have their fireworks seized.

Please be smart and stay safe this year and enjoy one of the Valley's professional fireworks displays instead of breaking the law and tempting fate. If you would like to help eliminate serious injuries and property damage, fireworks can be dropped off at Fire Station 1 located at the corner of Bernal and Nevada St. between the hours of 8AM and 5PM Monday - Friday or taken to the Police Department at 4833 Bernal Ave.
