Congressman Helps Third-Graders Plant a Tree for Earth Day
The tree, grown by one of the students, gets a permanent home at Amaral Park in Pleasanton.
Congressman Jerry McNerney (D-Pleasanton) hosted a tree planting ceremony at Wednesday to celebrate Earth Day with a class of third-graders.
The students and teacher Kathleen Whitworth joined their special guest at near the school and planted a redwood tree sapling grown by one of the class members.
Madhav Vats, who has been cultivating the sapling for more than a year, had asked McNerney to help him find a place to plant his little tree.

“I was reminded while planting the tree with the students today that all of us can make a difference and help keep our planet healthy and clean,” said Rep. McNerney in a press release. “Thanks to the hard work of a third-grade student, there is now one more redwood tree growing in a park in Pleasanton. This tree will help keep our air clean and be a special reminder for the students about what they can accomplish.”
The students also shared ideas with McNerney to help keep the planet clean and healthy, which varied from “Don’t litter,” to “Don’t let your balloons go because they’ll go into the ocean, and turtles will think they’re jellyfish.”
