Local Politicians Bag Groceries for a Cause

Congressman Jerry McNerney, Mayor Jennifer Hosterman and former Mayor Tom Pico helped to raise money for muscular dystrophy by working a shift at Safeway.

Safeway shoppers got special treatment Monday with local politicians on hand to bag their groceries. The "celebrity bagger" event was the culmination of a month-long fundraising effort by Safeway for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Baggers included Congressman Jerry McNerney (D-Pleasanton), Mayor Jennifer Hosterman and former Mayor Tom Pico.

Alisal second-grader and muscular dystrophy patient David Fletcher was also among the celebrity baggers. The 8-year-old was diagnosed with the condition when he was born.

Susan Houghton, Safeway's Director of Public Affairs, said the northern California region raised $1.9 million for the organization. The Santa Rita Road location had a goal of $12,000.

Monday's one-hour event raised $600 from shopper donations. Amador Valley High School cheerleaders were there to chant and cheer for the baggers and those who donated.

"[The event] shows great local spirit," David's father said. "They worked to create a sense of excitement ... we really appreciate everyone's help."
