The obesity epidemic in America has been well-documented.

The Centers for Disease Control estimates two-thirds of adults in the United States are overweight and half of overweight people are obese (one-third of the adult population overall).

new study has the latest figures on the obesity rates in Alameda and Contra Costa counties. They are both below the national numbers.

Diet and exercise are obvious solutions to this problem. Walking is considered one of the best ways to get daily exercise because it's easy to do, it can be done by most age groups and it's relatively injury-free.

With that in mind, we thought we'd take a look this week at homes for sale that are within walking distance of shopping centers, schools, parks and other facilities.

Overall, Pleasanton has a walkability rating on walkscore.com of 50. The site lists the city as "somewhat walkable."

This four-bedroom, two-bathroom house at 4177 Vineyard Ave. has a walkability rating of 78. It's listed at $579,000 and is described as being close to downtown Pleasanton.
