The survey deadline is June 9.

Pleasanton Unified School District Superintendent Parvin Ahmadi is asking parents to take an online survey to give their input about the proposed schedule changes to the school year.

Ahmadi sent the following letting to parents in the district earlier this week:

Dear Families,  Beginning with a Board presentation in October of 2013, there has been considerable time and attention focused on a possible change to the instructional calendar.

In an effort to inform the community, an informational web site was developed, public forums were held, school newsletter announcements were sent, along with other forms of communication. The proposed calendar options were also discussed at Board meetings on May 27th and June 3rd.

A survey is now available for parents to express their view of the various calendar options. The deadline to complete the survey is June 9th.

To access the survey, please visit the link below. In order to verify that you have a student currently enrolled in Pleasanton Unified, you will be asked to enter the Student ID number and the year of birth for your child. If you have more than one student you are able to take the survey for each of your children. Paper versions are available at your child’s school.

We encourage you to take the time to read the materials available on the district web site explaining the options under consideration, the merits and benefits of each, as well as the challenges and concerns.

Please note that the chapterized version of the May 27th Board meeting presentation on the instructional calendar is available on the district website. At the next Board meeting on June 17, the 2015/16 Instructional Calendar will be an item for report, discussion, and possible action.

What do you think about the proposed options for the instructional calendar? Did you take the survey?

Why are we fixing what is not broken? PUSD test scores are high, graduation rate is high, and the percentage of students attending college from our District is also high. I really don't see the problem. This would have a huge impact on many of our programs (sports, etc) and all of our families. One of the arguments is students "forget" because the Summer is too long-2 weeks will make THAT much of a difference to justify changing the calendar? Many districts have changed their calendars stating the same arguments. PUSD has not, and yet our students and district continue to excel.

@larue one of the proposed changes shifts the school year by about 1.5-2 weeks. This would make second semester end prior to the new year. This would be great for high school students who could then go on a winter break without having to worry about finals and truly enjoy the break. There are other reasons in regards to sending out transcripts to colleges, but I don't want to give false information. I just know that the current system is an issue since most other schools (outside of our immediate area) typically end their semesters at winter break. There are multiple options out there because some people want to travel during the school year and the extra breaks would allow that. I think the survey is a perfect way of expressing your feelings. if enough people say they do not want a change, I'm sure the district will listen and keep things the same =)
