First graders in the Pleasanton Unified School District will enjoy smaller classes when they go back to school this August. In a unanimous decision made by the Board of Trustees, the class sizes will be reduced for the next school year from the current 30 to 1 ratio to a new ratio of 25 to 1, according to the district website.

The Pleasanton Unified School District posted the following blog on their website:

"During the May 14th Board meeting, the Board of Trustees unanimously approved a recommendation to use $112,000 in district funds to match a $213,000 contribution from Pleasanton Partners In Education (PPIE) to set class size in first grade at 25 to 1 for the 2013-14 school year.  Class size is currently 30 to 1 (student to teacher ratio), and this change to 25 to 1 is  for first grade only. The Board of Trustees appreciates the work of many volunteers who contributed to the fundraising efforts. If you have any questions, please contact staff in your school office."

The Pleasanton Partnerships In Education Foundation raised the money through the annual "Giving Fund." PPIE works each year through fundraisers, hosting events like the recent fun run and last fall's "Toasts and Tastes of Fall" to raise money to help fill the void when district funds fall short.

The Board of Trustees has not yet been reached for comment.
