Photo Gallery: Bike to Work/School Day

At the Dublin/Pleasanton BART station this morning, at least 200 cyclists passed through an "energizer station" to get free t-shirts, tote bags, bagels and coffee.

The station is part of the Bike to Work Day, the annual Bay Area-wide event that encourages residents to get out of their cars for the day.

Cyclists took a few minutes to enjoy the giveaways.

Daniel Gillette, a Pleasanton resident of two years, said his commute from downtown to the BART station is relatively short and hassle-free.

"Living in downtown makes it fun to go biking," said Gillette.

Longtime Pleasanton residents Jim Keysor and son Evan, arrived at the station together.

"I think it's wonderful for the cycling community," said Jim Keysor about the event.

Shawna Healy, who lives in Dublin and works in Pleasanton, said she tries to bike at least three to four times a week.

The station also had a raffle drawing for flat tire repairs and free bicycle safety checks at the station.  The energizer station was sponsored by the cities of Dublin and Pleasanton, Hacienda Owners Association, BART, Alameda County Public Works Agency and Dublin Cyclery.

Pleasanton students were also encouraged to ride to school today.

At the three middle schools, those who came on their bikes got bottled waters and giveaway bags with reflector stickers, flashing bike light, brochures on bike safety and coupons.

The Pleasanton Police Department were also there to hand out the giveaway, facilitate helmet checks and provide safety tips.
