Baseball: Anderson shuts down SRV

Foothill wins 3-0 to stay atop EBAL standings

Chalk up having a short memory to the growing list of attributes Foothill High pitcher Will Anderson possesses.

A week removed from a his last start in which the Falcons won a wild 15-14 game against De La Salle, Anderson was nearly untouchable.

The Fresno State-bound righty scattered six hits in a complete-game shutout as Foothill edged host San Ramon Valley 3-0.

"(De La Salle) was a wild game, but I put it behind me," Anderson said. "This was a huge. We're trying to take the (East Bay Athletic League) and games like this will keep us in first."

Pitching with a 2-0 lead in the fifth, Anderson walked Joe Love and allowed singles by Max Dutto and Ben Fishman to load the bases. He calmly worked himself of the jam by getting an infield pop up and a strike out to end the inning.

"I just had to bear down, trust myself and throw strikes," Anderson said.

He retired the side in order in the final two innings and finished with five strikeouts as Foothill (12-4, 5-1 EBAL) hung on to sole possession of first place.

"I thought he got stronger as the game went along," Foothill coach Angelo Scavone said. "He kept the ball down a lot better today and was throwing his off-speed pitches for strikes."

Brandon Viceral's two-run double which scored Jake Jefferies and Michael Theofanopolous in the first provided all the run support Anderson would need, but Oregon State-bound Brandon Defazio tacked on an RBI-single in the seventh to score leadoff hitter Matt Owen.

Viceral finished the day 2 for 2 with a walk an notched the only extra base hit of the game.

"(Anderson) threw really well," San Ramon Valley coach Chris deClerq said. "When you're facing a good team like Foothill, you have to take advantage of the opportunities you get and we didn't do that."

He said starting pitcher John Hochstatter, who allowed seven hits in a complete-game effort, pitched well enough to win, but they weren't able to come up any big hits.

San Ramon (10-6, 3-3) plays Monte Vista and De La Salle next week.

Amador Valley 10, Granada 2: Brian Hamm's second-inning grand slam highlighted a lopsided win for the Dons, who prevented Granada from pulling off a sweep of the Pleasanton schools this week.

Michael Mallory struck out three in five and a third to pick up the win.
