Football: Last Second Field Goal Propels Amador Valley Upset of SRV

Osterholt's 20-yard field goal gives Dons 24-21 win over San Ramon Valley

Amador Valley 24, San Ramon Valley 21

The Star: Amador Valley's Alex Osterholt did it all for the Dons, finding the end zone on touchdown receptions of 41 and eight yards, and kicked the game winning 20-yard field goal with 1:14 to seal the upset.

The Turning Point: After a pass interference call on 4th down and 4 from the 29 gave Amador Valley a first down, Kyle Moreno found his favorite target, Osterholt, on an eight-yard touchdown reception to tie the game at 21 with 11:17 in the 4th quarter.

The Quote: "We needed this game to keep our NCS playoff hopes alive," Osterholt said, needing one more win next week over Foothill to qualify for the North Coast Section playoffs.

What's next? San Ramon Valley travels to its cross-town rival Monte Vista, while Amador hosts rival Foothill on Thursday night.

Bottom Line: The Amador Valley defense made timely stops in the second half, shutting down the San Ramon ground attack, and putting pressure on Wolves' quarterback Zach Kline.

Amador Valley High's Alex Osterholt is a do-it-all type football player for the Dons —literally.

The senior's 20-yard field goal split the uprights with 1:14 left in the fourth quarter, giving  the host Dons a 24-21 upset victory over San Ramon Valley.

"The left hash made it more difficult than I wanted it to, but the line did a great job, and I got it through," Osterholt said of the game-winning kick.

Osterholt did more with his legs on this night than just kick.

He found the end zone with 11 minutes, seventeen seconds left in the fourth quarter on an eight-yard reception from quarterback Kyle Moreno, getting hit at the three-yard line and lunging for the goaline to tie the game at 21.

Osterholt also caught a 41-yard touchdown in the second quarter to send the Dons to the half tied at 14.

"We've had our ups and downs all year long, and for us to come out with a win tonight is big for us," Osterholt said. "We needed this game to keep our NCS hopes alive."

San Ramon Valley jumped out to a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter on a one-yard touchdown leap from Kyle Egan.

With 6:48 left in the first half, the Wolves went up 14-0, on a 53-yard touchdown run from Jordan Weiss, in which he broke six different tackles.

"We fought til the very end tonight," Weiss said. "Hats off to them (Amador), they played a great game. We just came up a little short."

The Wolves special teams came up big in the third quarter, stopping a fake punt attempt by the Dons on 4th-and-8 from the 41-yard line.

Three plays later, Weiss found the end zone again, this time from 17-yards out, giving the Wolves a 21-14 lead.

San Ramon closes out its regular season next week when it travels to rival Monte Vista, looking to head into the postseason on a high note.

"Monte Vista is always a big game," Weiss said. "Records dont matter, nothing matters when we get together. We've got some guys that are banged up, but we will be ready to go. We always come to play."

With a win next week over Foothill, the Dons would become playoff eligible for the North Coast Section playoffs, a feat that isn't being taken lightly.

"Foothill will be a challenge for us," Osterholt said. "It's always a fun game to play. We need that one to get to NCS."
