Monte Vista Runs Over Amador Valley

Amador Valley looked to improve their record to 5-3, but were surprised by the visiting Monte Vista Mustangs.

Monte Vista High ran all over Amador Valley High in their East Bay Athletic League football matchup Friday night, shutting out the Dons 27-0.

Mustang tailback Zack Chung weaved, spun and powered through the Amador Valley defense, collecting 161 yards and two touchdowns. The mighty 5-foot-8-inch frame made the most out of the holes his offensive line punched open against what looked like, a bigger and stronger Dons’ defensive front.

“Our (offensive) lineman fought hard all four quarters and I give all the credit to them, so, good job to my lineman tonight,” Chung said.

The Monte Vista offense was clicking early and often as they made most of their drives, scoring 21 points before halftime.

“Zack was great, he ran the ball well. They were gearing up to try to stop the pass, putting a lot of guys deep in the secondary, so, we took advantage of that,” said Monte Vista head coach Craig Bergman.

The Mustang defense was dominant against Amador Valley, giving the opposing offense little running room and intercepting Dons’ quarterback Kyle Moreno four times.

Two of those interceptions were made by sophomore defensive-back Marco Zamora.

“They were mixing up their coverage almost every play, they would come out early in cover three and then show up cover two later in the drive,” Moreno said. “They were really just messing with our receivers… they would re-route them and they did a great job doing that.”

Moreno looked inconsistent during the game. In the last minute of the first half he took his offense inside the Monte Vista’s 10-yard line but threw an interception with less than 15 seconds left on the clock.

“I was making the wrong reads, I was trying to force the ball in there,” he said. “We just need to get back to work and get it done… I need to get my act together.”

Turnovers made it impossible for the Dons to put points on the scoreboard, as every time the offense got in rhythm they would give up the ball. The team looked frustrated on the sidelines.

“We gave them some free touchdowns. We turned the ball over numerous times and I felt that mentally we did not play very well,” said Rick Sira, Amador Valley head coach. “They deserve credit. They were able to execute and get the job done. They deserved to win.”

Monte Vista (4-4, 3-2 EBAL) will play Foothill High School (3-5, 3-3 EBAL) next Friday, while Amador Valley (4-4, 2-3 EBAL) will face California (6-2, 3-2 EBAL).

Many thanks to Police/Animal Services. Next order of business is to educate residents not to allowRead More ducks to nest on their property that is not adjacent to natural waterways or canals - it may seem cute, but it's cruel when the mama duck loses babies to cats and storm drains.
