Hart Students Go Through First Day Without Ainsley Freeman

Though the slain Hart Middle Schooler had only lived in Pleasanton for six months, she had become a model student who looked forward to teenagerly things like dances.

Ainsley Freeman liked to text and play basketball and draw cartoons. She liked boys and she was looking forward to the Promotion dance like every other Hart Middle School eighth-grader. As is often true with devastating cases like these, the grisliness surrounding her death contrasts with the person her friends knew — a good student, outgoing, sweet. The 13-year-old was shot to death Monday night inside her Stacey Court home, as was her mother, 37-year-old Amy Freeman Burton. Police are investigating their deaths; there have been no arrests, nor is there a clear motive, but police have said they do not believe a killer is on the loose. Read more about the ongoing investigation here. And here. Parents throughout Pleasanton likely had the …

Video: Family, Community Gather to Mourn Hadessa and Solaiman Nuri

A candle-light vigil was held in Concord on Sunday in honor of Solaiman Nuri, 41, and 9-year-old Hadessa Nuri, who were fatally struck by a reportedly out-of-control SUV on Treat Boulevard, Saturday, April 7, 2012.

CONCORD, Calif. — Stoorai Nuri was waiting Saturday morning for her husband and two daughters to come wheeling back on their bikes from the park. They never arrived. "My sister was home waiting for them to come back from the park," said Helen Karzai, Stoorai's sister. "... we just ask that everyone mentions us in prayer and that God be with us." Patch interviewed Helen Karzai at a Sunday night candlelight vigil where close to 200 friends, family and members of the community gathered to pay respects and offer prayer for the victims of Saturday's fatal accident on Treat Boulevard in Concord. Stoorai Nuri, the mother and widow of the family from Afghanistan, briefly appeared at the flower-covered memorial scene where just a day earlier her 9-…

Beloved City Employee, Mother and Wife Passes Away After Stroke

Roberta Dikeman was a fit, active competitive rower whose sudden death has shocked friends and family.

You don't even have to know Roberta Dikeman to know that this was a woman who did things with all her heart. Just glance at her Facebook page to witness her full on love for her children (a post of a first tooth lost!), her commitment to fitness and a bright sense of humor (enjoying the smells of a yummy dinner a neighbor was cooking one recent night). On Feb. 7 the Dublin mom of two posted that the Dublin City Council was going to recognize her for outstanding achievement for earning two certified indoor rowing world records in a Peninsula event: most meters in 24 hours (226,136 meters) and longest continual row in a division for lightweight women 40-49. She never made it to the celebration. Dikeman, 45, suffered a stroke that day and …

Fatal Crash Victim Remembered For Generosity and Intelligence

Co-workers of Robert Cheney share their memories of the man killed in a fatal crash in Newark.

Robert Cheney was always the first one to arrive to work at KWJ Engineering Inc. in Newark. He’d greet his co-workers good morning, open doors for them and have enlightening conversations with them as early as 6 a.m. But that all changed on January 18. The 69-year-old Pleasanton resident never returned to work after his two-door Honda was struck by another vehicle at the intersection of Mowry Avenue and Cherry Street. He was killed instantly. And the two surviving occupants of the other vehicle are now facing murder charges in connection to his death. In the days following his passing, silence and solemnity surrounded the office. Cheney’s vacant desk served as a constant reminder of the life that was lost in such an untimely way. For more …

What a waste of a wonderful human being. It is sad when someone who has contributed so much to bettering our lives through both his work and his personal life dies. It is even worse when he is killed by parasites. The irony is almost unbearable - a man who dedicated his life to work that saved and protected others dying at the hands of completely selfish, self-centered people.   more ›
